Foil kites - lost of center lines?

Postby BraCuru » Sat Jun 08, 2019 12:30 pm

Wonder to know your experiences in a case of breaking TWO center lines of a foil kite?
In other words - a RAM kite stays connected to a control bar only by the steering lines.

???

Cant fly, Cut one steering line with my hydrofoil, kite stood in the air until it flew to the other side and landed on the side of the wind window, a week later cut a steering line and a central line (again HF mast, and yes, already dulled the edge), kite colapsed inmediatelly.

I don't see the point of that question? That's remember me the joke about the spider;

Today I will demonstrate two things. The first being that spiders can understand and respond to basic commands.'

The crowd laughed and jeered but undeterred he opened a box on his desk and a spider crawled out. 'Spider, walk left'

The spider moved to its left. The crowd was silenced. 'Spider, move right.'

The spider moved right. The crowd gasped. Forward, backward, the spider responded again and again. The crowd applauded in awe.

The scientist then removed all of the spider's legs. The crowd, confused by this, watched in silence. 'Move left'

The spider didn't move. 'Move right'

Nothing. Forward, backward, no response. 'This is to demonstrate my second finding. Once you remove a spider's legs, it goes deaf.'

Thanks but in your second case the kite was still attached by one steering line.
My question is what if a kite stays attached by two steering lines ONLY.
I know it is going to collapse but what then...?
Did anybody experienced a death drag in such a case please?

I may be missing something here but it would similar to pulling the top hat qr on an old ozone frenzy or access which would release the front lines to very slack condition. Maybe the canopy woul flap about a bit more and that would be it unless by Murphy's law it flapped itself into some weird tangle!

Grab both steering lines and pull on them until the flying lines go slack. That's what will happen.

I just had experience at high wind with old line speed4 lotus10. I did backroll handplant transition with kite loop. Pull was so hard that I flew and submerged. Both front pigtail broken, red z-main and br- cut, red side bar got in half, green br6 attach-point ripped and green mixer ripped. 2x pigtail + 2x z-main + 2x br-main extension with little sewing and bar and back to water.

Everything went fine as kite was not attached to me but flagged out on red submerged bar piece I think, then water surface tension kept kite down. I rolled lines to bar left-overs. Thanks to lotus fabric did not take water in, so only small walk of shame after packing the kite.

I had 3 of 4 break all at once on a boost landing with a hard downloop. Hand recoiled into my harness hook and broke my hand. That was nasty. Downloop was late and it was finishing with my board edging hard in the water. Kite just flagged out on the water not surprisingly.

Here I have tried to embed a short video of a frenzy top hat safety release that allows the centre lines to release to very very slack, look at the bar and you will see the font lines have gone. They are stopped from completely disappearing by a retainer rigged between the end of the rear leaders. So no big deal but bear in mind that this is light wind. Also the design has moved on to such things as 5th line. I could not find a high wind release video but I have done it myself and it is generally more comfortable getting the kite down than doing it by just pullings the rear leaders to backstall it down.

Nope can't seem to embed on this old tablet, it is utube search for: "Ozone frenzy 2011 safety" if you are interested.

If that somehow happened you ll get a nice Burrito ^^
all the power goes through the center lines, if you loose them the kite will lose its structure and it will collapse.
