I’m planning a trip to a long side-offshore pointbreak. I’m going to bring *some* foil. I’m not sure if I should bring one of my Moses surf wings (I have both a 633 and 683S) and get a 71cm mast, or do I buy a more dedicated surf foil (possibly a Cloud IX X24) and bring that?
Plus sides to my existing foil are that I’m used to it. Plus sides to a surf foil like the Cloud IX are that people really use them in waves.
I don’t think I’ve seen a single video of a 633 carving down the line on a peeling point wave, but the foils from dedicated surf foil manufacturers obviously are getting used for this. Do you use your 633 or 683S in the surf? Tell me about it.
Cost wise, a 71cm Moses mast is almost the same cost as an entire aluminum foil.

I use it in proper waves sup and surf foiling. I also am currently testing the X24 from Cloud 9.
In my opinion the 683 does not surf. It is too small and twitchy
The 633 and x24 are similar in takeoff speed. They count as "small" for sup and surf foiling. They need a decent size wave to stay flying. We are talking 3ft. with moderate speed to really have fun and not struggle to take off.
The X24 is a bit more "surfy" and carves a but nicer though turns. You also have 3 different tail stabiliser position options for more turn or more stability.
How much experience do you have surf foiling without a kite? How good a surfer are you? Or do I misunderstand and you want to kite the wave with the foil?

Thanks Gunnar, sorry if I wasn’t clear, I want to kite with this foil in the surf, not use it as a stand-alone surf/sip foil. This is the spot I’ll be at (skip forward to the kiting):

I’m a pretty good traditional non-foiling, prone, paddle surfer (so many qualifiers to clarify “regular” surfing), so I’ll just do that if there’s waves but no wind.

From the wave in the video either will work well. Personally I would now tend to gravitate on taking the X24. Make sure you get it with the 30" Mast though. Otherwise 633 with 91cm Mast.

The problem is I think I'm going to need a shorter mast than my 91, and the cost of a Moses 71 mast is almost as much as a complete aluminum foil setup. The reason for the shorter mast is that it needs to fit in the small planes at the beginning of the video I posted above. I can bring the 91 and see if there's room in the plane, but there are no guarantees.

How about building a Hoverglide-based mast with Stringy’s adapter? It’ll be heavy though.
I think 91cm mast would fit into any plane

It's not that there isn't 91cm of space in the plane, but there are luggage size restrictions on the plane. It's not that 91cm won't fit in the plane, but will they let me bring it if the plane is otherwise full? I'm not sure.
As for board size, that should be the subject of a Gear Builders thread (actually, I think I'll make that thread).

Re 71cm mast: I believe you will be unable to carve properly with the 71cm mast, you will touch the water with your board's edge when doing even the slightest more "radical" turn in the wave, espcially on its face...
So 91cm definitely better!!
