Recommended Hydrofoil for Big Air?

Postby FLandOBX » Tue Jul 23, 2019 11:02 pm

I'm having fun boosting on my heavy SS Hoverglide, but I know that my current setup is inferior for that purpose. What are the recommended characteristics of a big air hydrofoil (wings, board, etc.), and what are the preferred brands/models people are using for that purpose?

(I used the "search" tool, but couldn't find anything directly on point. Apologies if I missed something.)

i'm thinking the fastest wing you can find...

then maybe an over-powered FS sonic maybe give you the best chance of boosting to the mooN

All carbon
Race / speed wings like moses 637 and 645.
At least 100cm mast
Carbon board, I prefer a bit of volume for structural rigidity (with Moses plate mount it feels like a single unit (board and mast)
Some are doing well on plank style boards like Cab double agent (but with carbon mast and wings)
Around here where we are boost obsessed its all Alpine and Moses.

SS ghostwisper with hypermiler seems to work for me...It's basically rebranded Moses rig with many wing options (SS, Moses,RDB)
I like the SS board better as it has rails.
So far the setup seems to hold up just fine after 1000s of jumps and some abuse :-)
but I know that some people reported braking wings and boards on jumps ;-)

Fastest wing you can get (=small) , but lower AR so don't have to be race wings.

Same speed as higher AR wings when you go fast, but way less stress on the fuselage in landings :thumb:

Is that the combination Adam Withington is using here?

...maybe with an added foot pad on the board?

Yes, same foil but different SS board.
As others said, make sure you get longest mast and racy wings.
Some locals also use delta and spotz with good success.
Maybe avoid true pro-racing stuff as those wings/masts are made hollow (depending on the manufacturer) to keep the weight down, and they may not take the beating well. If you go with Moses/SS gostwhisper, check our RDB freerace wings - pretty robust and fast enough to get decent boosts..although they may need some sanding and look a little scary (like knifes.. pretty sharp too ;-) )

The RDB race is a Moses 637 clone and identical but a bit beefier build. I broke 1 Moses 637 but the replacement has been no issue, but the RDB is definitely heavier. Have since switched to the Havok 645 and generally like it better in all respects. Also seems plenty strong and I have 1000's of boosts on it. I have seen every shape of Alpine wing break. Some guys have not had any issues, but I have seen them all go at some point (2018 vintage)
RDB wave is a great wing but first gen was very heavy. I hear the new ones are lighter...trying to get my mitts on one.

There's a tradeoff between speed and pop. the fastest wings dump all kinds of speed when you curve them too tight and load the wing, but that's exactly what you need to do in order to get huge pop. I think you want an intermediate wing something that goes really fast but has enough wing area that when you push it hard in a turn it doesn't loose lift. Others may have had good luck on race wings but not me, I can't get enough pop on them. Long mast really helps so you don't ventilate when you pop.

This is one of my favorite foiling videos. The music doesn't hurt it, either IMHO. ;)
