What kite are you flying? I was flying tiny kites on long lines and having trouble due to being underpowered and kite taking too long to move across window. First time more powered on foil kite and short lines and it suddenly started working for me. Still work in progress, but makes more sense now. Also, just practice more.

Should one learn normal tacks first on surface, or is it unnecessary and I should go right for the flying tacks?

I know that big kites make it way easier but I only have small tubekites.

I learned without doing surface tacks first. I also ride small tubes. It maybe took a little longer to get the timing, but it will come with practice. Depending on how underpowered you ride, you may need to use a loop after the foot switch to stay on foil.

I had to read this thread just to see what 'kipping' meant!

Sorry what's the appropriate word? I'm not a native speaker...

Probably tilting is what you should use.

I am a native speaker, and don't know the proper word either. I kind of like yours, though.

I will be starting working on these soon. I like the Ketos video. Seems like it's a dance of foot switch, unweighting with the bar, and redirecting the kite power. My big breakthrough on tacks without foot switches came when I was relaxed enough to basically follow and feel the pull and direction of my kite as it swept up over my head. Took my a long time to get that feeling though.

I suspect foot switches will require even more sensitivity to where the kite is, and what I need it to do for me to switch feet.

I don’t know if this will help anyone else, but the breakthrough for me occurred when I stopped trying to tack and started trying to (1) start like you would start a heel side 180, (2) do a quick footswitch as the kite is coming high across the window, and (3) complete the move with a toeside 180. It’s just a tack with an early foot switch, but it made more sense from a timing perspective to break it down like this. Once you get this you can experiment with the timing of the foot switch — early, middle, or late.

Another important note for strapless tack is foil elevation. The higher you rise up from the water when turning upwind, the more response you get out of the board in roll axis since there is less lateral resistance from the mast.

Thanks Peter,

I've been focusing on the most difficult!! But on the surface...
My friend does them, but not consistently.
