New pro Gong foil wings?

Postby B19 ELS » Wed Aug 28, 2019 12:09 am

Hey guys, I am looking to buy a Gong surf foil pack to surf foil and kite foil.

The 5’8 55l prone surf foil board and the large surf foil with 65cm mast. I weigh 80kg.

Questions:
1. There is a classic front wing and the new pro front wings. How do they differ? I assume the classic is more lift and drag. Pro front wings are less drag and faster with less lift?

2. Could I potentially wing foil using the 55l board and not a small SUP?

3. Is the pro XXL wing much better than the classic for pumping?

Thanks in advance for any light on the subject.

A confused kiter...

I can answer Q1 since I have asked Gong this question:
Yes, the pro has a thinner profile and is therefore faster and less drag and lift. They recommend me to go with the normal Surf/SUP wing size M for the easiest progression as kitefoil. I cannot answer your other questions.

1. Yes
3. I wouldn't recommend kiting with a larger foil than Surf
M. It has tons of lift but handles speedchanges
surpringly well. It usually pops up immediately at
first downstroke. For kiting i think the the pro-wing is
the best option but I haven't tried it. For a beginner the
SurfM is probably easier since it is slower.
Pump foils are way larger than kite foils. It is in my
opinion to much of a compromise to have only one wing.
Gong have really low prices so I would go for 2 wings, it
is the same fuselage. As far as i can see there is only
one pro wing and that is a kite wing only.

I have the surf M wing and my foil progression skyrocketed when i started using it. From barely leaving the surface to foiling relaxed, flying gybes toeside and heelside and a bit of waveriding.
The wing really wants to fly.

I want to surf and kite in around a 1200cm size wing and then change to the xxl pro for flat water pumping.
I’m 80 ish kg and was going for the large surf foil and 5’8 foil surf board and then will make a small pocket board to kite on.

How much do you weigh on the medium wing?

I am also looking at Gong foils but their kite wings range is very limited. The standard wing is 712cm2 while the big one is 1092cm2.
Do you think the 712cm2 is a good option for a beginner? The equivalent wing on other kite brands is about 800/850cm2.

By the way, Gong naming convention for their foils is very confusing... Allvator 80 stands for 80cm mast, while Allvator 69 Pro stands for 69cm wing (??). Someone at the marketing team is a bit stoned :jump:

Thanks in advance

The Surf M will fit most a guess. 1200 seems to be a standard size for big wing kitefoiling. I'm 70 kg but it will fit a larger person as well.

I suppose you can learn on a really big board but it is a big step from a floater to the pocket board world.

65cm mast and a wide board is not a perfect combination for kitefoil as soon as you have learnt to fly. The board will touch the the water. More when you are going upwind in chop.

For me 80cm mast and the Catch 4'6 are about sweet spot.It is possible to start from standing on the bottom in reasonably choppy onshore conditions and still the board won't touch the water (much) when foiling.

I would choose a 1000-1200cm2 for a beginner.
The 712cm2 needs more speed to take off and have a higher stallspeed ( the slowest possible flyng speed).
I guess that the SurfM is the easiest to learn on.
Haven't tried the 69 pro though..

They do they xxl in classic and pro along with all sizes of surf foil front wings. Does anyone know how they compare to the Signature Albatross 210 pump wing which could be changed for then a large pro wing to kite on?

Also, what does this mean striaght off the gong large pro foil page:

"Size L of an area (projected) of 1227cm2 (1360cm2 extrados developed)".

What is developed and projected? I thought it would just be a straight cm2 area of the foil?

Can anyone enlighten me?
