Help: Toe-side back to Heel side Tack 180

Postby oregonkiter » Sun Sep 01, 2019 1:05 am

There are other threads on this. I am wondering if anyone just made a break through? I can do foiling heel-side to toes side 180's and 360's all day long on both sides at basically 100%. Easy for me now. No problem carving up into the wind, or send the kite behind me at all. No problem staying on foil as I come around. Flat water, swell, under powered, over powered no issues.

BUT, going from toe side back t0 heel side 180 feels like there is rope attached to my waist pulling me downwind. I just can't seem to get the bar and lines upwind of me, nor carve back up into the wind without fighting the kite. The bar is too far down wind of me, the pull is downwind, and carving up through the eye of the wind feels impossible.

Anyone who was in this same spot share a breakthrough with me? Getting my ass kicked!

Thanks!

I struggled with that trick too. What finally worked for me was being plenty powered, using one hand, and leaning toward the nose of the board while aggressively directing the kite in the new direction of travel (looping if not windy enough). Leaning toward the nose was the real key for me. Good luck!

Head up, look where you want to go and drive/lead with the kite. Eventually going into it with plenty of speed makes for another breakthrough.

You might want to go a bit downwind just before initiating the turn to make sure you are really underneath the kite and fully sheet out the bar. If that is not the case, it will pull you off the board backwards.
Otherwise, the two tips above are also important. Once you commit, carve hard into the turn (with the bar completely depowered) and dont hesitate to lean on the lines with you bodyweight forward (Its awkward at the beginning because the lines are somehow in front of you, I know, but it will work). Have fun trying!!

Okay, so out of 100 attempts today--seriously--I had three that came all the way around. Board sunk, and didn't kite away, but I came through the eye of the wind.

Great tips!

The other one I got on the beach was to pressure the toes all the way through the carve. That helped a lot. It feels possible now, and I am re-motivated to do 100's more.

Mostly getting board through eye of wind now and falling in upwind with my back to the wind and my body and board facing the right way. I have had a few with feet still on a slightly sunken board ready to go new direction. Anybody remember this stage, and the path forward?
