Thanks for all the answers! I think i will try and find a used one in good condition and go for it. Usually the conditions here are very light 8-10knots with quite gusty wind so not ideal conditions but i'm also used to it so its hopefully fine.

obviously you dont need to spend $$ to learn...

but either of these might be helpful in minimizing the learning curve..

The best suggestion I heard was find someone with the same board and foil and get them to setup your front strap/hook and foil position.

I would love to hear about your journey.

My theory based on my learning is that too much twin tip and surfboard experience can hurt as much as help.

Also, you tend to go back and forth and reduce time on your foil.

Although eventually experience flying kites does come through. My thought is that you can gain that experience foiling.

It may be true that muscle memory from TT & SB riding is something that needs to be overcome when learning to foil ... however, having little or no experience of riding while flying a kite is surely more of a handicap?

The most difficult part of learning to foil is the initial water-starting & getting-up-on-the-foil. This is extremely challenging even for an experienced kiter - there is a very precise sequence of actions required to accomplish it. And until you're up on the foil & riding, you're not going to get ANY experience of flying kites (while moving) at all. :-?

Not saying it can't be done, but for most people, especially in the conditions the OP is describing, I think it might be a recipe for frustration. I'd certainly be interested to find out how the OP gets on ... & reports from anyone else who jumped straight into foiling.

Get into it right now before you learn too many surface board bad habits. I have a theory that it would be easier to learn to hydrofoil without any previous surface board experience. When you are very experienced you spend a lot of the time unlearning and retraining your muscle memory for the hydrofoil.

I would spend a few months on a directional board first with straps and see how you get on. I am sure it is possible to learn to hydrofoil early on if you have a natural aptitude for it. Remember that hydrofoiling is a bit dangerous - especially in the early stages - and these dangers are probably multiplied if you are a less experienced kitesurfer.

Thanks for all the answers and tips guys i appreciate it!

I got a pretty good deal on a north hybrid board (2 straps, can't do 3 straps setup) with a duotone/North foil setup in very good conditions, almost never used, with big and small mast for about 825 euro.
Anyone got any solid objections against a setup like that otherwise i'm going for it :).
