Cheap Winter Foiling Vacation

Postby joekitetime » Wed Sep 11, 2019 3:18 pm

Yesterday the wind was real light. Got me thinking about how much I love foiling and am going to miss it as we (we being the residents of the SF Bay Area, California) head into winter. Got me thinking about planning a foiling vacation, somewhere.

So, looking for thoughts/recommendations for a CHEAP and WARM spot to foil over the winter, probably for a 1 week vacation, possibly two.

Girlfriend is kinda liking the idea of Florida. I also heard Texas. And of course there is La Ventana.

But, there are limitations - mainly, I'm a tight wad. Drive to Ventana is 36 hours. Florida is a $500 flight (I think). So is Ventana (I think).

If anyone has any ideas for a place with decent accomodations et al I'd be very interested to hear!

Thanks so much.

You live in SF with that Cost of Living, and you wont go for a 500$ flight ?
What about Hawaii ? but that is even higher CoL than SF.

Maybe Cancun ? Might find cheap flights there.
Texas should also be good.

Buck up. Make the La Ventana drive, bring a tent and sleep for maybe $12, eat only at the burrito stand. Hard to imagine cheaper than that.

If you are too sketched about the drive to LV or want something a bit shorter you could do San Carlos Nuevo Guaymas. Only 19 hours from SF and only 4.5 hours of driving in Mexico.

It's lighter wind than LV so foiling is key.

Now we are talking! Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out! I was thinking of moving my boat there in a few years so it would double as a great time to do some reconnaissance!

Thanks!

La Ventana would be my first choice, South Padre second (but it gets colder in TX too)

hawaii in winter is surf season..
sure you can take your shot foiling the best swell anywhere...but after nov if you have sufficient wind 1 out of 4 days i'd feel fortunate.

there is a reason errrbody and their mama from the west coast goes to la ventana for the winter...
it'll be your best spot to go....esp for foiling.
especially espcially if youre a tightwad... and can spend as much or little as you want ther.
oh and fish tacos are super cheap...and delicious (@ 'Vientos del Norte' in town)

also SFO is a hub...
no reason you shouldnt be able to find 1-2 wk round direct trip tickets from san fran to cabo airport for less than $350.
check on google flights... and generally you'll see the best(cheapest) deals on a tuesday morning.

not sure on price of gas... but i'd prefer to spend my vacation kiteboarding than driving days and days in a desert
