If you are too sketched about the drive to LV or want something a bit shorter you could do San Carlos Nuevo Guaymas. Only 19 hours from SF and only 4.5 hours of driving in Mexico.

It's lighter wind than LV so foiling is key.
Now we are talking! Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out! I was thinking of moving my boat there in a few years so it would double as a great time to do some reconnaissance!

Thanks!
YES! I had not thought of San Carlos when I recommended LV above. I've stayed in the $45 USD rooms at Totonaka RV park in SC and that's about as cheap as I've found so far in 4 trips. The dinning out is about the same price or slightly higher than LV. The Mexico portion of the drive is much easier. And, there is a brand new "libramento" bypass around Hermosillo now on 15D that removes that nightmare.
Essentially the same motor that drives the LV wind is what moves the wind at SC only somewhat lighter.

I'm really glad I asked the question, thanks for the responses. I see the soggy peso on the maps...

Yep, There's a gate out by the road with a guard that will require something like $20 pesos ($1 USD). Great spot. Easy access. Some of the nicest (small) kiter crew of anywhere. Beach-side drinks and food. On some days I will walk across a tiny stream to foil up in the bay in front of La Manga (second image above). Mostly solo. Nothing like the fest that's been LV lately.

I'm not too far off from cashing in my chips and heading down to the sea of cortez to live/sail. San Carlos is a hurricane hole which I've been considering as a place to live. So it has been on my radar to go check out. It is pure coincidence that it was also recommended for kiting, so awesome! The other place I'm considering is Barra de Navidad.

But now I have a super good reason to go check out Guaymas this winter!

Thanks!

Funny you should mention Barra de Navidad,
We live in Barra (actually Melaque 2 miles west) for 5 months every year. I've been bringing kite gear with me since around 2009..... A huge 16m and a Slingshot Glide. With the pre-foiling life I would regularly wait weeks without a session. Now that I'm foiling I can get out and play 2-3 times a week between Christmas and Easter. My 8m is my go-to foil kite, and I'll break out the 10.4 on rare occasions (Clouds). Cost of living is much cheaper in Melaque/Barra than you'll find in either LV or SC.
If you need to be buried in Barra info please PM me.
