Big surf wings

Postby Flyboy » Fri Sep 20, 2019 6:16 pm

What's the consensus on large "surf" wings? I'm thinking of getting a Gong foil. They offer the M Pro wing which is 69 cm wide 985cm2 projected, (1092cm2 actual) area. This strikes me as being similar to the Moses 683. The next wing up the Pro L is 77cm wide 1227cm2 projected (1360cm2 actual) which seems like it would be similar to the Moses 790, rather than the 633.

Having never used anything larger than 700 cm2, I'm sure that the M pro will provide a whole lot more lift & stability in transitions than I'm used to. Not sure whether the Pro L will would be overkill for kiting?

If you are average weight, and dont aim for surfing in waves without kitepower, then I would recommend the M (if it is like most other wings, I dont know that specific one).

Got 800 and 1200 cm2 myself, but if I had a 1000 I think I might use that even more (and find it would be the sweetspot size for most conditions) than these two.

Extremely individual though

The Gong Surf Pro Wings have a thinner and faster profile with less lift than than the Surf Wings.

Thank you Peter! I have this suspicion that a 1200 cm wing is unnecessarily big for kitesurfing & that around 1000 cm is an ideal compromise between speed & lift. But I have no personal experience ... so I am asking. I know some people like to have ALL the equipment, but I would rather not have so many choices. Obviously the Moses 633 is very popular & that is around 1200 cm, I believe.

I have been having a confusing communication with Gong on this subject. Their website shows the GONG KITEFOIL ALLVATOR FREEWAVE as having a 69cm front wing which appears to be identical wing to the 69cm Surf foil Pro M. I assume that this is the wing I would want, as in general, for kite foiling, more speed & less lift is a good thing.

My favorite wing for kiting in waves is the Cloud 9 X24 (1138 cm2). I also have a X28 (1414 cm2) but find it too big in anything other than light wind. The X22 (906 cm2) is a fun wing but I find it a little small for waves.

The X24 should be pretty similar to the Gong Pro M which is 1092 sq cm (actual) area. The Gong is a bit higher aspect than the X24 as it's 27 inches wide rather than 24.
