Moses mast length for fun "freerace"

Postby dave1986 » Mon Sep 30, 2019 8:07 pm

I currently use a Moses Onda 91 for freeride foil. I'm considering a longer mast for riding in deep chop and for a bit of faster speed-run fun on smaller Moses wings and exploring (not actually serious racing).

I'm considering Moses 101 or 111 mast length.

and

I'm considering Moses 558 or 637 wingsets.

Can anyone give me advice on pros and cons of these 2 x mast and 2 x wingset options for fun "freerace", considering that I already own a Moses Onda 91?

I think I would go for the 111.

I got an 91 and 100 myself, and they are pretty close in length, hard to feel that much difference.

Good I can have to full foils set up and just jump in and change, with different wings and boards, but would go with an 111 if it was to get some difference that is noticeable :naughty:

I am not into any kind of going fast myself, so 100 is spot on for me, not 111.

For fun freerace go with the 111 mast and 558 wing.

Ask flag58 on here

He has loads of experience on the full moses line you mention above

His comments to me, made me stick with my 101 mast, but locations I use also play a part in that decision, my 84cm mast is the ideal length for me as a shallow water option, less length is distracting and less fun

As for the 588 wing, many of us have had them, I say had them, but not anymore, this may give some indication to how it compares with today's offerings, stability and stalling qualities, lift power, low take off speed, have moved on a lot

The new 720 wing is looking like a option for speed with stability, with low stall speed and very low take off speed (high lift)
and it fits on the standard Onda fuse

Ask steve (sfollis on here) all about that wing as it's his new wing, and he is testing it right now with different stabilizers and logging his findings,
I will most likely buy that wing later on when I can justify the cost and concentrate on using it
I have used it but I am not yet ready for it, as jumping and other basic skill sets are taking up all my water time.
The 633 is very fast when you get locked into using all the foot straps, front and back straps all the time for all points of sailing,so much more engaging and more stable, much faster average speed as well, but the foil kites I now use has a lot to do with that as well.

Last year I used 111 with 633. This year I use 111 with 683S. I sometimes feel that even longer mast would be better.

I purchased the 101 w/ 637 foil set this spring for more or less the same reasons as you. Fast, cover long distances quickly and easily, and I also wanted something for jumping. Plus, shedding a few pounds compared to my LF Thruster was a good thing. For all of those it has checked the box. My only dislike is the higher minimum take-off/stall speed. Having gotten used to popping immediately up on foil with the lightest tug of the kite, I now need to be a bit more deliberate with water starts if under-powered. Same for the need to keep the speed up on maneuvers. Both are fairly minor and easy to adjust to with time, and I do end up riding one kite size up.

As for mast length, I would have considered the 111, as it's of most advantage when really heeled over. However, it's too long to fit into the back of my Subaru while still attached to the board, and daily disassembly is a no-go for me.

I will mention that the 637 foil's tips come to a rather fine and delicate point. I managed to chip one without really knowing how, and I use a set of custom foil covers. Maybe I'm just sloppy after owning the bullet-proof Thruster wings that have blunt tips.

101 is a great length. If you are under 6 feet tall and have to deal with sand bars and on shore wind then the 111 will drive you nuts trying to get off shore. 101 gives lots of room for chop and waves but is still not so long as to be unwieldy. Also, the extra 10cm does impact stiffness and responsiveness...the shorter, the more sporty. I have owned and flown 633, 550, 558, 637 and now 645 wing sets. 645 rocks.
