Anyone else have yearly stats to share?

Postby Sfollis » Sat Dec 28, 2019 9:42 pm

It’s been a great year on the foil.

Number of sessions: 105
Distance covered: 3597 km
Time on the water: 152 hrs
Longest session: 100 km
Fastest speed: 56.5 km/h

Strava might not be the best software but nice to look back at the stats and add pictures to the various sessions.

All the above was possible by having the right equipment; allowing me to foil in winds from 6-30 knots, a flexible job and most of all a very understanding wife

I've had 257 sessions in 2019 till now in total I can see (a few more coming up the next days, winter holidays...), 30 percent of them on surfboards though, or surfing, many in Capetown 2 weeks...

So only 178 kitefoil sessions - but thats okay, happy with that as we got winter here, no chance of riding except weekends as totally dark outside work, and only IF the weather will allow in weekends

Logged sessions (eg with Strava) or just great memories?

Sorry to be an analytical nerd, but you probably have to define "session" for a meaningful comparison. If you spend 3 hours riding, but you take a 15 minute break in the middle to rig a different sized kite, is that one "session" or two? I'd count it as one "session", but others might say two. The only way I accumulate more than one "session" per day is to ride in the morning, completely pack up and go home, and then start all over in the afternoon, probably at a different location. For that reason, I usually just count "days" kiteboarding, not "sessions". (I'll have to look into Strava, 'cause counting annual numbers in my old school paper journal is just too darn tedious. :o )

These are my foiling stats. I don't display my non-foiling activities in my spreadsheet because they are so few.

My year goes from September because that lines up with our Spring and lets me count the whole summer in a single year. That doesn't really matter. I foil all year round.

Year Hours Sessions
2014 1 1
2015 2 2
2016 72 72
2017 147 123
2018 165 125
2019 300 230
2020 131 116
Total 819 669

The stat I particularly like is my gear use. My favorite foil and mast are up to 437 hours and my favorite board has 455 hours on it. Even my less favorite foil has 318 hours. It's all in pretty much brand new condition except for a few paint chips that I repair every year or so.

123 days kiting (some days have multiple "sessions" per FLandOBX's concern)
167 hours spent kiting over those days
1764 nautical miles traveled (3267km)
Fastest speed: 26.4 knots (48.9kph)
Most used kite: 7m Bandit

There are three days left in the year though, so these can still go up!

No you don't. Near enough is good enough. It's not as if this is maths. We're all just having a brag and a bit of fun.

If you define session count then you have to define session duration and intensity. Yesterday I had a 1 hour session in the morning, and a 1 hour session in the evening.

The morning session only had 15 minutes riding because the wind was so light. Most of the time was spent milling around on the beach and trying to get going and discussing the invisible wind lines. The kite was inflated and in the sun the whole time so the measure of sun exposure was fairly accurate. There was a fair amount of physical exercise from the brief riding, swooshing the kite back and forth to gauge the wind power, and carrying everything back to the packup area.

The evening session was fully powered up on a 7m kite, charging around all over the place, ripping out tacks and jumps and taunting the slow windsurfers. Always fun. In terms of physical exertion and wear and tear on the gear it was double the intensity of the first session.

The worst year in my life of kiting, but...

38 sessions
361 new tricks (during 30 sessions)

2020 can only get better!

FlandOBX

I included the hours for the “nerds”, therefore my 152hrs over 105 sessions means my average session was ~1.5hrs with an average distance of 35km. I’m never that lucky to have multiple sessions in a single day.

I was curious to know if there was a better logging platform other than Strava?

Still so many definitions of "sessions".

Is it simply kite days no matter how many spots you have been to?

Is it times one has been to the water and rigged up, and down and left again? Meaning sometimes several times a day same or different spots.

Is it times one changes kite and/or board, going ashore landing and rigging another kite or changing board(s)?

Is it simply times one enters the water also after a break, meaning can be many times a day even with the same kite and board?

So depending on which of above one uses, the "number" of sessions can be say a factor 3 or 10 or 20 apart depending on the individual :naughty:
