Ozone Alpha V1 vs Naish Boxer 2020

Postby dave1986 » Fri Jan 17, 2020 12:46 pm

Looking for opinions on how these 2 kites compare in 10m or 12m sizes for use with a hydrofoil in under 10mph.

Which kite will stay in the sky in lightest winds?
Which kite will relaunch in lightest winds?
I notice that the Boxer uses the slightly heavier quadtex fabric.

Any other points worth noting?

I agree that weight is super important, but I'm not sure it's as simple as "the lightest kite is always best" for light winds, especially if they're only a few grams different in weight. Other factors such as canopy and profile shape will likely influence the low-end.

P.S. My 10m Alpha weighs 2.12kg, 130grams less than your claimed weight.

Does anyone have the weight of a 2020 Boxer for comparison?

I´ll put my 10 m Boxer on the scale later today and post weight here.
Done now: Weight is 2.74 kg (on a rather accurate scale, maybe including some grams of sand / salt)

Don´t know the Alpha, but the Boxer is by far the best overall kite for foil & wave I´ve used. It stays stable in the air even during silly low lulls. It is important, however, to keep it static at 12:00 instead of trying to keep it moving around constantly (very counter-intuitive for me in the beginning!).
I also think that weight is not the single most important parameter for a good lightwind foil kite. The shape of the canopy and the mechanic balance of it are at least equally important.

Agree, weight is only one parameter...

Strutless are usually rubbish for other boards than kitefoiling, and kitefoils in the upper end of the range.

Meaning are you going to use the kite for other things than marginal winds or their sweetspot wind, dont go strutless.

Find out which kite you like the best (eventhough that is what you are trying to now, I know, and this is also 1 struts)

I know many who dislike their strutless, as if out and wind picks up, they are flapping all over.
Where I dont mind, as I rig down, so avoid the upper ends.

Relaunch, and drifting in the water is sometimes tricky, and drifting can be impossible...

But they ARE lighter and better, if you can live with above.

Same goes to a tiny extent for 1 strut kites, compared to 3 strut kites, but not nearly as bad, as they drift just fine when on the water, most of them.

Maybe slightly off topic...

But how well the kite turns, how it balances, how it reacts on sheeting, these are the other extremely important and different parameters one has to evaluate, apart from weight.

My Boxer 10m 2019 - 2020 version weighs 2.65 Kg.

Disclaimer.. no clue how accurate this cheap scale of mine for luggage avtually is... it says 40kg/10g..

I share Onda's enthusiasm for the boxer... I sold all of my wavekites (Ozone Reo and Best Cabo) and happily use the boxers... I expanded my quiver of 6 & 9 with 7, 10 and 12. Not that it was necessary for single person use, but my daughter is joining me more and more often.

Peter is so right, if you have a kite with a grate low end, very light weight and it don't eject you in each sheeting...you have a Airush Ultra. The perfect LEI kite for foiling, at least for me.😉

10m weighs 2.45 kg

On Ozone Alpha tech chart 10m Alpha official weight is 2.2kg
https://ozonekites.com/products/water-kites/alpha-v1/

So, now it's clear best such kites for weights:
1. Alpha
2. Airush Ultra
3. Boxer

By the way interesting that is weight of RRD Emotion 10m, it's also for foiling.

That's interesting. I'm surprised that the boxer is 20% heavier (450g) than the Ozone Alpha. I guess quadtex is heavier which makes a difference to weight.
