Jumping with large wings (Onda) destroys masts?

Postby fun2kite » Sun Jan 26, 2020 5:14 pm

Hi all,

I noticed damage to my Moses mast last year. (TOP of the mast.. connecting to fuse part).
I bought a new mast.. and now seeing some developing damage to a new mast..

Recently it occured to me that it may be due to me jumping with large wings. AS you land with a wing like Moses Onda W633 or simular, I suspect the landing impact eventually damages with inserts area of the mast.

Did anyone have same thoughts and experience? Or I am just unlucky with the two masts I bought? Who else is jumping with large wings and what are your experience with damage to mast?

Is it fair to say that one should NOT be jumping with larger wings to avoid the mast damage ?

Alternatively, maybe my landing technique is wrong and landing with a flat wing is wrong.

It’s not great. Will eventually compromise the mast or the board. Something will give eventually.

I have been riding and jumping the 1000cm2 683S for the past 9 months. No issues for now.

One of the reasons I bought the 683S over the 1250cm2 633 was that I had read that the 633 was not warrantied for jumping. However, I am sure that a lot of people with the 633 do have jumping as part of their routine though a lot may be strapless riders.

Same to one of our friends... two Havock mast with the 720... exactly the situation you describe fun2kite... think Moses should indicate not to jump with large wings ...

Too bad the 720 is really a lightwind beast! :cool2:

Interesting topic. Very likely there is however more to it than just the wing/mast itself. I believe that a small, low aspect wing is best for jumping because it will take the impact better than a huge wing/high aspect wing.

But it also probably depends on what jumps we are talking about here. Height makes a huge difference. Also, I found out that most riders tend to land just like they would on their TTs which puts a lot of stress on the parts. You need to go in Front wing first instead and pull on your bar to soften the landing as much as possible.

I have a 633 wing and love it. The idea of jumping it seems crazy to me. Something has got to give eventually with that large surface area hitting the water repeatedly. Small fast wings, sure, I get jumping those is a viable thing.

The Onda W633 is very nice for jumping, i have no problems with damages, take care with the landing.

Nice review, also about the jumping ability.

That's cool and all but a lot of us decided to simply ignore that fact as boosting on a HF is just pure stoke!
