Wing surf in waves, onshore?

On all videos I see, wind is either sideshore and sometimes side offshore, when I see wingsurfers riding swells having the wing hanging in one hand.

What about dead onshore winds, which are very prevailing in many spots, how does it work regarding having the wing float in your hand - will it hang in front of you towards the shore?

Any videos?

Would be happy to hear from the experienced how you feel it works when onshore

Curious, as I am new to this so no experience riding waves yet...

I just hold the wing by the front handle on the strut so I can keep it up high above me and then it's out of the way to ride the waves. Not as much fun as side to side on winds but still more efficient than a kite in those conditions.

Gunnar videos are death onshore. Infact it is the MAIN reason to use wing. Onshore wind.

For me, travelling in the same direction as the wind and at the same speed as the wind means I am going to have to hold up the wing. Not a big deal.

Would like to try but...all these videos looks super fun just foil kiting...plenty of wind and waves and a smaller board to rip. I mean think about it.
They seem incredibly stoked flying slowly on a huge board, imagine having more speed control and turning sharper on a smaller foil board...
What happens when crashing in the breakers with a wing? These big foil boards have a leash, the wing has a leash...With a kite its super easy to kite loop and just body drag out of an impact zone.

Maybe, but if you havent done it, believing in it - you will never know....

I go all in, but still learning - then we will see later about the pros and cons and how it evolves, or not

Remember how kitefoiling was something many looked at with disbelief when it started?

And now it is close to, or, becoming the most used in both wind and kite and wing - foil

In parts of the video, it looks like the wing is not really parked seamlessly to liberate you from your gear and unleash total freedom in the surf, as claimed! There's still a fair bit of attention required to keep the wing flying and to keep the tips out of the drink. Sure, kiting in those conditions would require some looping, but is it really worse?


Main issue in onshore winds on most spots would be to get out at the back. It can be tricky on a kitefoil already if really onshore and with any significant bit of swell on beach breaks, I don't see how that'd work with a wing and a big board. Really depends on the spot though...
