I disagree that kiting is surfing
Only if you could let go of the kite and keep
Surfing on a wave—-but even being dragged across a giant wave face is not surfing— thats dragging
Trolling around on swells is not surfing
Surfing is harnessing the ion particles moving in rotation thru the ocean to form a mountain or slope that a board can slide down— and back up- while the whole “mountain” moves toward the shore. Surfing is using all the gravity to slide into critical tight spots like the barrel or snapping under the lip
Kitesurfing is riding a board while being towed by a kite
Thats like saying that wakeboarding is surfing because you can slaysh a small wave.

Agree with this. Except maybe the wake part. Playing devils advocate, if surfing is defined as riding an energy wave in water using only gravity, then letting go of the rope and surfing the wake independently seems to fit the definition. I don't think it needs to be ocean waves (great lakes have surf) and can be man made (hard to say Kelly Slater's machine isn't a surf monster

I definitely agree

It can be. You just need to remove the kite pulling you part. You won't see this in any videos I can find. But it is very possible to do.

Have you seen just hydrofoiling on open ocean swells, with no kite? It is the dream of surfing. Some kites offer a very good surfing like experience for this too.
I would suggest you open your mind a bit.

Yes
We tow into ocean swells
But then we let go of the rope
Ive kited since 99 and you a right there is very little
Footage of true surfing with kite assist after all these years
No market for it really...
But its out there and thats why i started kiting
To get pulled in to waves
But then let the kite wait while you surf-no tow
Anyways
Just clarifying energy in swell is used to surf
Not a kite pulling

Foiling is as close as it gets to flying McFly’s hoverboard. Or to flying a magic carpet.
Whether you choose to fly behind a boat or using a kite or flying with a windsurf or just holding a wing. Flying over waves included.
You might consider it surfing or kiting or riding a wake - the common word is flying it.
Fly the foil!

I'm not sure that "slide into critical tight spots like the barrel or snapping under the lip" is an essential characteristic of surfing. In the early days, before high performance short boards were developed, were people not surfing? Using the energy stored in a wave or swell is surfing. The whole fun of kiting in waves is the feeling of using that energy. Kiting in ideal conditions: side shore, down-the-line with a drifting kite, is the closest to prone surfing. Kiting in onshore conditions - moving the kite a lot to generate power - is very different from traditional surfing, but it's still using those "ion particles". Similarly with foiling waves. It's all good!

That's an extremely narrow definition of surfing... A log gliding on a fat shoulder wouldn't be surfing, or a foil riding away on an unbroken wave at mach 2 wouldn't be surfing either, if there's no lip? River surfing on a static wave is also surfing.
And wtf about ion particles... ? Good old fashioned water molecules are perfectly suitable to surfing!

I love kiting in waves, in a surfboard or foil. Side off wind is the closest you can get to surfing, as you can park the kite and just ride the wave. Unfortunately that's pretty rare. In foiling, I know lots of riders like to use bigger foils and tiny kites, to minimize kite power, but I find the need to fly the kite actively takes away from focusing on the waves. I prefer to be more powered up and zip around the wind swells...which I wouldn't call surfing but it's sure fun.
REO Stevens had an interesting comment on his first wing foil attempt. See attachment screen shot....wing allows 100 percent depower. As more talented surf focused riders take it up, we're seeing more and more videos of using the wings to tow in and the luff it until the wave is done. The f one guy on progression project podcast was frothing about the potential. I am stoked...but going to take some time investment to get to that level of competence.
