On a related topic, I have had my harness fail on two different vacations where nobody could fix it. Now I always bring this handy tool called a sail makers awl. It is commonly available in sporting or sailing stores and it comes with sewing instructions that even I could follow.

Great tool, wouldn't be without one. Works equally well with dental floss and other heavy threads. The included "rope" is sometimes overkill.

Having it break on two vacations, it looks like it was worn, eventhough it could be a manufacturing defect indeed, but most often the belt/gjord breaks where it goes around the spreader bar.
Occasionally at the sewing on the harness.
Both are usually covered in webbing/velcro thus you don't see it about to break.
Wear is also higher on seat than waist harnesses.
So in particular before traveling, check under the webbings and either have it repaired, or buy a new one for the journey (and if you want, use the old one at home in safe places)
