Best all round kite quiver for foil & freeride TT

Postby kiteandfly350 » Fri May 08, 2020 7:31 am

Looking for the best whole new setup for solid foiling performance and still good TT freeride fun. Planning on buying whole new 3/4 kite quiver that will cover me from foiling in as low as 8 knots up to holding my TT to 30 plus. 92kg Rider, Intermediate/Advanced TT, Intermediate Foiler. Riding on Shinn Gear.
Looking at Naish Boxer/Pivot - Cabrinha Moto - Slingshot Rally GT/RPM

Help please!

Depends when you want to start on your TT, and what kind of foil you have. For the lighter winds you will definitely want a one-strut. If you have a big frontwing with a lot of lift I'd go for a 10m or 11m Boxer, and then a 9 + 7 pivot. More or less you then could in

8 - 15 knots: foil on the boxer
15-20 knots: foil on the 9 or 7 pivot or TT on the boxer
20 - 40 knots: TT on 9 and 7 pivot

if you've got the extra cash you could throw in a bigger kite as well, like a 12-14m pivot or boxer for earlier TT action. I see they even make a 16m boxer this year. Don't know if those kites are any good on a TT though.

I have the Boxer/Pivot combo (but 20 kg lighter than you). Right now with a lot of overlap as I am sharing the quiver with my son. Boxer 14m/11m. The 14m more for low wind twin tip riding. Tried my new 11m Boxer (2020) yesterday for the first time (with 1250cm foil). Love it, wind was around 9 knots, sometimes a bit lower, worked like a charm.
Pivots 11/8 (plus Slash 7/5 for really high wind and surfboard).
For 10 knots and above the Pivot easily stays in the air and works very well for foiling. (gleitenTV has a test of the 12m (in German) and they were surprised how good it worked with a foil even below 10 knots.
I am very happy with this combo.

For me the 14m Boxer is a lot of fun on a TT. Either powered up with a normal size 134x41 or in less wind with a large TT 145 x 44. Apparently it is softer in it´s handling than the Pivot, less crisp. But it goes early, turns decently quick for it´s size (downloops from jumps and transitions no issue) and holds its shape over quite a big wind range (there are a number of comments that it is the one strut kite with the best stability in the upper end of its range)

Agree, this type of quiver will cover well :thumb:

If you get a 10 one strut, I might go 8 and 6 in the "normal" kites.

Thanks to all for the advice.

Foil wise I have a Shinn setup - Mega K & K2 Wings with a 60 & 90cm mast. Last year I bought a 15m Contra (without thinking too much..) to get me going in light winds. Works well but for foiling I can see the huge advantage of smaller single strut kites.

I’ve heard good things about the Boxer and Pivot it’s just a matter of what sizes across the spectrum. Given my weight, might be worth going on the larger size so perhaps a 12m Boxer, 9m & 7m Pivot? It just comes down to how good the pivot will be on the foil and vice versa for the boxer on the TT - without buying 5/6 new kites!!

Thanks

Pivot test (In German), toward the end of the video is the foil part. Maybe can give a visual impression: https://gleiten.tv/index.php/video/acti ... /page/345/

I have a 10m Pivot (2017) as my most used kite for foiling and TT. In light wind I use a Peak4 8m, or a LF Solo 12m (it has more grunt than the Peak, but needs a little more to stay in the air as you enter the water...), but as soon as it is above 10 Kts i am onto the 10m Pivot. I have found it to be a great kite for freeride foil, plenty of wind range and able to get me upwind on a surfboard if its too much on the foil. Smallest kite is a 7m Blade Trigger; if its too windy for that on the foil, then i can easily use the 10m Pivot on a TT. I'm 87Kg and better on a foil than a TT!

Duotone Neo works well on the foil and great on the TT. Got Ozone Alpha’s for the foil as well and they are just brilliant, but didn’t do it for me at all on the twin tip.

Have the Ozone Alpha ,agree great for foiling (but not as good as a foil kite but good in waves) just ok on twintip. Have the Peter Lynn Synergies ,comparable to the Ozone Alpha but better price.
