Yikes! Foil board leashes, and Wings

Postby bay surfer » Fri May 08, 2020 4:00 pm

Just noticed almost all the Wing videos the're using board leashes. That's scary, but I see why, its really hard to chase your board/foil down wind/waves with a Wing. Now Wings don't seem very practical to me.

Yes, you cannot body drag with a wing, and your board will go downwind faster than you can swim holding a wing. Wait till you get your board leash tangled around your rear stabilizer with your wing leash underneath the whole mess. It's fun!

What is the problem?

It is only for kitesurfing, leashes can be lethal and never used, as if you get yanked by your kite and then hit hard with your board later.

Not possible with wingfoil, this risk does not exist :thumb:

Great point! I am about to embark on winging next week and it never occurred to me that you can't body drag!

But I will have leashes!

Thanks!

The board leash is utmost important, you can not avoid it and you use it A LOT, trust me, it has a good cause, but it doesnt matter riskwise as said, no risk.

When learning you will experience fumbling around with your board and get it tangled around the mast ha haa, but you will very fast learn to avoid this :thumb:

The wing leash on your hand though, could maybe be dropped, as it happens very rare you let go of the wing.

I use both though.

Even now and then I'll have the foil pitch sideway and be expelled off, usually on a wave or transition, and go flying from 1meter up, and also the board and foil sometimes flies up too. It seems, you mite get boomerang, just over thinking.

No.

You wont get a boomerang effect, when the board/foil flies up or away.

With a kite, the risk is the kite is dragging YOU, while the board/foil/whatever will slingshot after you, especially if it is slightly stuck in the water first.
So NEVER ever use a leash when using a kite

With a wing, you never get pulled away with the wing/wind, so even if you fall or jump away, and leash gets tight, you dont get this risky boomerang effect, as you dont have anything pulling you.

I have fallen in so many ways on my wingsurfer, and this effect is not present at all, like when using a kite, where it would happen more often than not.

Getting used to a board and wing leash is a minor irritation you quickly get past. I like using a waist style coil leash for the board and a wrist coil leash for the kite, but that’s just personal preference. I’m still amazed at the number of kite foilers clinging to the “winging isn’t worth for this reason or that”. Reminds me a bit of the windsurf-kiteboard transition days.
