Game changer Electric future foil idea for kites or Wings

Postby ShaveTheWhales » Fri May 15, 2020 3:25 am

Well, I'm bored this morning and thought about the inevitable swimming in, but had a thought that could possibly be developed as a modern option like the leg rope in surfing...
One of the big companies could develop this easily...

Problem 1 - Kite drops from lack of wind. If only you could go backward 'just a bit' the kite would open and it would relaunch.

Problem 2 - Kite drops & tangles.

Problem 3 - No wind I'm f*cked.

Now we've all seen the electric torpedo hydrofoil boards... The motors are getting smaller & smaller. and we don't need a heavy long-lasting battery (it's just to help get back in).

If the motor was directly under the board- Not the foil end, then it would only be used in the above situations and out of the way of the foil...
Obviously for all-rounder use not racing and could possibly be used to help Wingsurfers to get up on the plane if timed well with pumping...

For those of us not quite as fit as we should be - it could help you out of an interesting situation perhaps, with timed bursts on swell..
Have a look at the size of this and what a future micro variation could bring..

Time for another coffee :)

Standard version

Hot version :) h

Sorry you guys should have read my post - that stuff has nothing to do with kiting...

I was about to post the same as the prior replies, as I have an interest in motor-assisted take-offs for surf foiling, to hopefully ride waves that are otherwise unrideable (short of owning a waverunner and having any friends willing to tow me in  )

But with your clarification, I re-read your post....you are looking for a motor that will drive you backwards so you get enough tension in your lines to relaunch? You are either a mad genius or just plain mad! But the boost fin seems like it should fit the bill for you. Mount a fin box and you're off to the races. Try it and report back, maybe you start a new thing.

Personally, I am pursuing wing-foil as a light wind option to hopefully avoid the limp strings problem entirely. Foils have enabled amazing light-wind kiting, but I don't enjoy the constant worry of the kite hindenburging. At least with the wing, it's a relatively easy paddle back in if need be, on a bigger floatier board. Initial testing is iffy though, the low wind performance is questionable ... though when my boost wing gets here, maybe it'll be the ticket to get off the water ... once up you don't need much wind as you can pump pretty effectively.

Would you be sitting on the board with kite in the water when you use the motor to go backwards to tension the lines? It doesn't seem like you'd be able to get any speed on a normal sized kite-hydrofoil board in this situation.

Could be nice for swimming in though if it was compact enough to be out of the way normally.

A boost fin mounted at the tail of a strapped pocket board just behind the mast could work. You use the straps to direct the thrust downwind to hep tension lines. Once the kite is up you point the board across the wind and use the boost to help get you moving forward both for lift off and apparent wind, and once up and foiling its out of the water no longer creating any drag! Could also speed up the eventual swim in.

Put the pod/scooter/jet on the back of an impact vest, thrusting “down.” Lying back in waterstart position it will tension lines, once kite & rider are up it is out of the water. Have it shut off in low/no load condition, forget and ride. Doubles as rescue assist if you lose everything else....
It will earn major beach kook points, too!
