This thread has been brought back from the dead, but I'll go ahead and answer. On a strapless freeride foil, I'll jump off to leeward of the foil and try to catch it with my upwind arm. This is maybe dumb, because it's easy to hit yourself with your foil, but looks cool if you do it right. On a race foil I do like the racers mentioned in the first post - slowly lay down on my back in water deep enough that I'm sure I won't hit the foil. I don't do this because of the straps, I do it to keep from scraping my expensive race foil on the bottom.

I’m practicing a way of dismounting by coming in hot, starting a duck tack (not a roll tack) but don’t level out the board and don’t bring the board around all the way, bleed off speed going straight upwind while facing downwind, and step off windward and pull in with kite at 12 o’clock for a tiny hop to land with zero lateral ground speed. Foil board ends on its side just downwind and to the side of you.
