SS Ghost kites

Postby trod27 » Mon May 25, 2020 4:46 pm

I pulled the trigger and got a 6 and 8 Ghost. I only foil. I come from SSTs (5,7,9,12) I mostly rode 9 and 12 in Utah as we get holey wind and sometimes very light in summer. I mainly rode 5 and 7 in Gorge and 7m in baja. I ride 91/683s Moses with a Kanaha Shapes 37 strapless.
I plan to get a 4m for those Gorge days....
I also snowkite and have a 15m Turbine but usually used my 12m SST. I sold them all, except 15m Turbine

So the question is does anyone have reviews of 10 or 12 Ghost? I think I should get a 12m because it would be a nice jump for big kite and better for snow kite. I think a 10 would work, but it might be to close to 8m. I think 10m will turn faster but still want low end big kite for light wind days.

My review of Ghost so far:
I rode the 6 once and it is awesome. I have been riding the 8 and it has a ton of range. I think the Ghost has less low end then advertised but has tons of high end. Hard to say because my friends say I was out in light wind and I might be to critical. I think I am trying to compare SST to Ghost. 2 different kites I get it. I like both and jury is out for now. I wanted new kites and was willing to try Ghost. The Ghost does relaunch supper nice. It does turn slower and I already downloop alot when I transition. I am getting used to it and have figured out how to load up before turn. Also I went one knot up on rear lines which helped.

Ghost wind range from SS:
8m – 15-32knots (17-36mph)
10m - 10-27kn (11.5-31mph)
12m - 6-22kn (7-25MPH)

These wind ranges are TT ranges and not foil ranges I assume? Will be surprised to hold down a foil with a 8in 32 knts;-)

Thats true and I use the numbers only for range. I compare them to the SST ranges.
Still would like t hear a foil rider review of 10 and 12? and maybe more reviews of Ghost in general.

Just got the 4m Ghost for my 10yr old son. I had to test ride or first :) not quite sure what the high end is. The highest I tried it was about 30 knots, lowest I would say 18-20. Foiling.
Quite different from my SST. So far I like it.
I still love my 12m RPM for foiling, but I would like to try the 12m Ghost.

Tom do you know who? My concern is 12 is slow, but I bet it is not. My guess is a 12 would be a good jump from 8.
I think a 10 would be close to 8 and if anything I could jump from 6 to 10.

Hi,
I have the 10m and whireally enjoying the foiling, I have to say, that it really annoys me that the kite always wants to go down to the watersurface. Sometims it is hard to keep him away from there, especially after transitions.

One advice:

You are experienced, so unless you ride fast wings or racewings (and you dont, the 683 starts early), dont go with the 12 m2.

On the common big wings used today, you can ride down to 7 knots if average weight, with a 12 m2.
But a 12 m2 can not hang in 7 to 8 knots, unless it is superlight, meaning strutless or aluula or something...

And even if, they got limited upper range on a foil, and turns slow.

Whereas a 10 m2 can go down to around 8 knots, and far more fun in every aspect, turns faster more peak power and better upper end.

Why do you keep your 15 m2 Turbine?
Seems pretty useless for foiling, sorry to say :-?
And for snowkite you ride in even less wind also, isnt that a problem?

If you were a newbee on foil, the 12 could be fine, and used from 10 knots and up for learning, and when learned, you can sell it to another new rider, as it will be too heavy for the winds you can ride now, too slow, and too quickly overpowered.

But not being new, a 12 is something you should be reeeeeally careful about choosing.

So many dont use a 12 tube nowadays.
Either superlight strutless types, knowing they got very limited range, or foil kites instead.

Would go with a 10 m2 and be happy to have a "sweetspot" kite for most conditions.
Especially if the Ghost has good low end, then a 12 is not the choice as it will drop in the low winds you are able to ride in, and be a dog in terms of handling (again, assuming average weight).
A powerful 10 should be able to go down to 7-8 knots maybe, with long lines, and a lot easier to keep flying in your "holey" winds, than a 12.

And if you one day want to go low, get a totally different kite type

The listed windranges are of course useless, but that goes without saying...
