beginner foil setup

Postby kitedxb » Sat Jun 06, 2020 12:23 pm

Hi all,

Where I live we have very few days with good winds (10 knots or less on most days) so i started foiling last year.
I have been using a cabrinha double agent (60cm mast) during that time and am thinking of getting a moses foil now.
I have been looking around and they seem to recommend the 590 for beginner freestyle however the onda 633 with a 71cm mast seems a bit more suited for a beginner.
I tried a friends 590 with a 91cm mast back home and i felt it was way more difficult than the cabrinha i am used to.
anybody got some tips or comments about these 2 and what is best suited for a beginner.
Offcourse any other setup ideas are also very much appreciated.

Get a 91 cm mast and the 633 wing, and you will be fine, and dont need to change it later.

The 71 mast is too short as you are not fully a beginner anymore, and the 590 is maybe the easiest wing for a beginner it seems, does not pop up too violently, like the 633 will do if a total novice, but it starts later.

As you have an idea what is going on, I would go for the 633.

On the other hand, if you know you also like to go fast, more than play around slow - the 590 is fine.

Get 633 with 91 cm mast . Ive used both wings extensively. The 590 is much more difficult.
I have 590, 550 wings and 330,325 stabs and 2016 fuselage for sale.

If 85kg is you correct weight as shown in your profile I suggest you get 679 wing to be used with surf fuselage or 695 wing to be used with more compact and lighter kite fuselage.

71 mast is only good for very shallow locations so look for something longer than that so you can edge harder and fly higher.

There is something to be said for the shorter struts.

I learned on a 65cm and am still using it. The advantages are that you have more control and if you keep the foil high, then you have the lifting surface right where all the action is.

Maybe I am wrong, and maybe I just don't really understand the benefits of a longer strut.

I have tried the 633 a few times.

It practically jumps up on foil, it has a tremendous amount of glide, and it seems to be really efficient. I really like it, and am considering getting one, but I don't like the fact that it does not seem really possible to pump it at all; maybe it is just a question of technique and experience, as I have only had few tries and spent limited time with it.

The Moses 633/483 wing set would be an excellent choice from beginner to pro. Like all "larger wings" it has the ability to go slow but it also can really move pretty fast for a free ride wing. Its stable and maneuverable.
The industry has been moving to shorter masts over the last couple years. A lot of kits are around 70-80cm. IMO, the 2 major benefits of a 90cm mast (and up) are, its easier to go faster, more margin for error, and your angle of attack will be higher for better upwind performance. This year, for us, the most popular size for the Moses 633 has been the new 82cm mast. For Armstrong ,it has been the 72cm. Over the years, I feel around 80cm is the winner winner size. It does it all.
Good luck with your purchase!

Hey. As the first of my set I bought Moses w633 / 450 with a 91cm mast. Unfortunately, learning was too difficult so I bought a 61cm mast. Then it was only better. I have learned from this and I am still learning but with a long mast. Moses Onda is a brilliant set forever  :jump:

As someone said, more margin for error and you can crank it over and load it up for better upwind angles and speed. Especially handy in choppy conditions. So if you're happy cruising around and riding the swell, ~70cm won't bother you too much.

The downside, which is significant IMO, is that it takes the preciseness and response out of the setup (especially as the wings get bigger) for carving around. I've been on an 82.5cm mast for a while now (corona held up shipping on my 75) and after riding 75 back home with the same wings, it still feels laggy and wobbly ... which might be what you're experience with the 91cm mast.

I've seen a popular brand of full-carbon foil on the beach, board upside down on the ground ... and the 90cm mast wobbling back and forth in the wind :o I can't imagine how anyone could enjoy riding that.
