Roll Tacks: Stuck at 25% Success - tips?

Postby oregonkiter » Thu Jun 18, 2020 3:53 pm

Looking for the tip(s) to make rotating the body for foot switch as effortless as in the tutorial videos. I have realized that you need some speed, load up the foil as you head into the wind, keep the kite moving (don't stall it directly overhead). I get 1/4 or 1/5 on my strong side. Just not feeling the effortless unweighted foot switch yet. I suspect it's a combination of things, but hoping someone has a breakthrough suggestion for me? I am strapless on a small board and a 483S wing. I have better luck one handed, but by no means am opposed to using two. And yes, I practice a lot! as in 100's...

Thanks!

You need to chuck your weight forward at the point where you're switching your feet, push those hips forward and that will keep the speed up.

Some things that worked for me:

- it is much easier when you are fully powered
- bend your knees
- pull continuously and harder than you might think on your back hand to redirect the kite
- don't forget to look under your armpit
- switch your feet a bit later
- try to complete the whole move quickly

The breakthrough came for me when I started turning later. Having the kite past 12 before you start carving the board really helps you get through the tack with power. You want to be following the kite through the tack, not riding under the kite.

I agree, big kite helps. Foil kite helps too. Short lines help.

These helped me so much today! By waiting to carve through until I feel kite pulling from new side I went to 60% success. My foot switch still sucks—kinda a frantic hop but I think I know how to correct that now that my kite is in the right spot. It always amazes me how you think your kite is in the new side, when it’s not.

You follow the kite - the board follows you!

I find it all too easy to let the kite get too close to the edge of the window so it has no power once it is on the other side. Ok if you are going to loop it into a 360; but for a tack a little more backhand pull as the kite crosses Z may be helpful. I think Dave's tip of carving later will also help with this as it means you will not just be riding under the kite as it goes to Z. Looking forward to trialing the effect of turning later.

Cglazier

Thanks for the looking under the armpit tip. When I made sure I had a good look it naturally made me pull more and earlier on the rear hand which was very helpful to me and will help me improve my timing.

:thumb: Awesome!

Someone told me this when I was learning. I thought I had my kite way past 12, but then I saw a video of my tack attempts, it showed that I wasn't even close. It's hard to tell where your kite really is during the tack.

Making an effort to exaggerate the kite movement really made things click.

I’m not sure which wing you mean. 683S?
