PTFE grease question?

Postby B19 ELS » Fri Jun 19, 2020 3:02 pm

I was going to buy some Tikal Tef-Gel.

A friend who works on submarines can get me some Rocol RT15 PTFE grease for free. It's really expensive - £156 for 100g!!!

Is this the same as Tikal Tef-Gel or is the Rocol wrong for stopping galvanic corrosion on a hydrofoil?

Would bicycle specific teflon grease stop galvanic corrosion - I assume not?

Any help would be appreciated a lot from foilers out there!

Elliot

Tefgel is based on Polytetrafluoretylen (Ptfe) and som grease.
Ptfe-grease has the same base
Bicycle Teflon grease should be the same.

The greasy stuff may be different but
I use cheap ptfe-gel fom a hardware store. It works exactly the same as Tefgel to a fraction of the price.

Excuse my ignorance - but, why use a PTFE grease? Is that something beneficial to carbon fiber?

I have a cheap aluminum foil and I just use a cheap automotive anti-seize on my fasteners and mating surfaces. I haven't had any galvanic corrosion.

Tefgel is really thick and sticky. Once it’s stuck to your screws etc it’s going to stay there. (Same for your fingers, clothes and anything else it gets on!)
Don’t know about the Rocol stuff
Cycle grease is usually is much less viscous and would be more easily displaced.

I would stick with the Tefgel as it is tried and tested & works well for this particular application.

Are you are kiting in salt water. If so, I would say you have been very lucky. Or maybe you disassemble between sessions?

Being in Ontario Canada, I almost exclusively ride in fresh, lake water. I rarely disassemble my foil - just un-mount the foil assembly from the board and store it. Any time I've taken it apart, it easily disassembles without issue and without visible damage/corrosion. The grease is dark and gets on EVERYTHING, I usually have to be careful where I grab the foil, so I don't get the grease onto my kite bars if it gets on my hands.

So PTFE combats salt water corrosion? In the diagram on the TIKAL page, they only show galvanic corrosion from the dissimilar metals.
