You're talking about the type where you screw right into a plastic block right?

Going up one diameter size worked for me in the past as well.

Also, I used longer screws and cut off the pointed part. You don't need the pointed part of the screw for this application, and it gives you more threads to engage.
Yup , Plastic. I've gone up a diameter already. Good tip on cutting off the tip of the screws

The Amazon helicoil kit above has everything you need except a handle for the tap. The helicoils work well in stripped aluminum. I haven't tried them in plastic.

Ive used helicoils before (for kitesurfboard), but they stripped out of the plastic after a while.

I rather epoxy aluminium rivnuts into my boards now, very strong and much cheaper than a helicoil kit.

Simply bump up another screw size. The walls of the plastic insert box are thick enough. The threads on the new screws should be aggressive and sharp like a coarse wood screw, sharp to the touch, you want them to cut in, not all threads are equally sharp, also the suggestion to remove the pointed tip of screw for max grip in bottom of holes.

I used these threaded inserts with some epoxy on the threads. They are self tapping in plastic so the hole only needs to be enlarged to ~9.5mm before insertion. Avoid helicoils, as they require a specific tap and installation tool and can be quite tricky to install. You can inserts these threaded inserts with a short screw. If you use epoxy to glue the insert in, put some vaseline on the installation screw threads so the bolt doesn't accidentally bond to the insert.
