I wear the gecko surf lid. Similar shape to gath surf with neo forehead section so looks a little goofy but it is a proper lay up not plastic. Very comfortable, light and quiet for me even without ear plugs. Mine is about 20 years old and was so good imho I bought a second one which I still haven't used.

If you want to go really quiet, get an oversize helmet and wear a neo beanie over your plugs. If your climate allows and you don't mind the extra drag.

I believe the geckos might be using an inflation fit now, mine was just foam and happens to fit me perfectly!

Nobody has mentioned headaches yet. I wear a very nice helmet that seems to fit nicely on my very large head. Feels good, But after a 2 hour session I will consistently get a headache that no medication can touch. Hurts terrible for hours. I've tried about 8 different purchases on 30 years. Never get any problem long all day bike helmets.
Today my main interest in a helmet or head covering is to hold my new Mp3 buds firmly in place for foil crashes. Might try a scrum next.

noise is one issue, weight is another (foiling = whiplash falls). What's the lightest hard shell helmet out there (not counting custom made ones).
Forward Wip Pro?

What I call surf lids are lighter than a full helmet. They are like 3/4 of a helmet held on by a neoprene piece at the forehead. This means if you find the right size it can be very comfortable. The down side is there is no real foward protection, but I find it the best compromise. To me it is more comfortable than a beanie and no head aches.

I'm using forward Wip, not pro version. The wind noise thing has been driving me crazy since I started foiling 4 years ago. I've used ear plugs, but can't hear people talking to me.
Have a neo beanie, but often too warm to wear.

The gecko covers the ears and you can just make out the well in the foam that accommodates the ears. There is a grilled vent but this doesn't generate noise. For me it is very close fitting and feels enveloping rather than perched on your head. The sides can be flexed a little to get it on. Hopefully the current model is just as good. Of course I know that I have been lucky because this one could not be a better fit for me if it were custom made.

scrum hats are extremely comfortable, and feel so good when lots of body dragging is demanded out through the waves, they are cosy in cold conditions, although they offer minimal protection against my foil, but its better than no protection, second to that my snowboarding helmet is the ultimate for solid protection and great looks with brand stickers all over it, but its so dam noisy I have to ask the guys around me is it really windy, as it sounds like a hurricane is blowing all the time, even if its 12knts.

totally. I can be on the Beach to check out wind, and its like 14 knots. Put on the helmet and its 30 knots.. how can this not be addressed by helmet designers!!
