what are you workin on? kitefoil strapless freestyle progression

Postby lebast » Mon Jul 27, 2020 10:34 pm

After a couple years of foiling I am wondering where the riding level is at?
And if more people are getting into it (strapless freestyle) or if most people are still a bit scared of flying carbon axes hitting their bodies? If so what are your fears?

Which moves are you trying hard at the moment? struggling? Which future tricks are on your "need to land list"? And where do you see the future of this niche (beyond what Fred, Stephane, Cesar and more are already doing)?

Here are some impressions of an underpowered 9m² session of me.

Once I have a bit more steady pull on the bar to play with there are more things to do but compared to other windsports I am still amazed what we can do in this little wind and how fluent it feels.

let me know your wet non strapped foil fantasies

Fling jibes pre and post foot switch are solid, roll tacks both sides medium success. Want to work on heel side to toe side tacks, Toe side tacks and sitting on the foil. Lots to learn.

I've only rode strapless so far.. Foot changes before/ after gybes , sit downs, tacks (roll and duck), strapless pops.. I havent really mastered any yet but so much fun trying.
Sit downs are so fun though, very close feeling to a reoccurring dream I had as a kid. "Sitting" cross legged flying above the water :)

I'm still a bit kooky on my foilboard, but I have learned to sit down when things get so exciting that I just can't stand it anymore.

One of my friends made fun of me for doing this. "What's the point?" He said.

Well, it's fun.

Recently I learned to stand back up again. Another friend, who is years ahead of me in terms of skill, and who is tacking and racing and making everything look easy and effortless, saw me do it once and exclaimed that he never did that!

I was thrilled.

Probably the easiest trick to learn though, it took way less time than learning to do flying foot-switches.

Hadn't seen the straight jump with mid-air footswitch before. Nice. Very cool :thumb:

Going strapless made me relearn all the moves I was used when riding with straps. They all came together easily, 360s, flying foot switches and gybes, except the roll tacks. Not even close.

That made me realize I was still in the cheating stage when I had to pull the board by the the front strap in order to keep riding. Now I cant even switch feet. After carve I loose the board.
Long way ahead.

Real good... Since I have hopes to learn some of that, isn’t the stance with feet too far apart? Would it be easier or more difficult to learn with feet closer together?

If you look at ballet dancing (or diving) it is always nicer if feet are together jaja

I like the one hand kite control

Your 360s are very circular. Mine are more oblong:

I was working on strapless roll tacks (with mid-tack foot switch) but got frustrated and took some time off. I started winging.

I tried throwing an around-the-world the other day. I got halfway through it and then inverted my foil kite in the water and didn't feel like trying a second time, but it does feel possible. I'll try it again, maybe on shorter lines.

I might try the "sit down foiling" thing, but it always looked sort of silly to me.

My foot switch to gybe from starboard to port tack while going downwind at speed is still kinda weak, too, I could work on that.

I could put straps back on my board and do some jumps. I dunno, there's lots of things to practice but I've just been doing a lot of going fast lately. And winging when the windis over 20 knots.
