633/91/483 whistling relief and new stab?

Postby Whattheflock » Thu Aug 13, 2020 4:28 pm

My 633 setup whistles quite abit at times and would like to fix it. Ive read sanding down the trailing edge of the mast flat will help. Does anyone have some tips or trick to doing this?? I have some 1000grit wet sand paper at home and was going to use a chunk of 2x4 as a sanding block..

Id also like to make the 633 a little more lively with a smaller stab, read the 330 suits it better? Im just into strapless freeride.

its most likely not the mast. I've never heard of a Moses 633 whistling...
The trailing edge of wings is usually the source, but Moses wings are generally well finished on TE.
My 590 wing whistled out of the box, it turned out there were a few small pinholes in the clear coat. I had to paint and sand the wing.
Google around and you'll find some guidance, then do the stab first, then the front wing. Check the surfaces of the wings for pinholes or imperfections

Alright Ill look for that Tom. It gets pretty loud, everyone comments on my "screamer" of a wing.

So I wouldn't square your TE's, I'd probably do what George is suggesting here. I would only do this if I could confirm an imperfection either visually or by touch, such an imperfection might cause a loud noise like you're experiencing.

If the sound is changing pitch and volume depending on speed and angle to wind, then my hypothesis is that its the TE. If you are getting a multi-tonal disharmonic sound, ( cats fighting) its probably both wings.
when i had my 590 wing with the pin holes, it "whined" with a more constant sound on all points of sail.
I used to think this was a big problem, but after sanding multiple wings, i learned its totally fixable. Foiling with a noisy foil is intolerable!

Still have to dig into this, but the whine changes pitch with speed. It can get pretty loud!

totally silent at any speed or angle is bliss, and you would never accept anything else once you get total silence.
I have never had a wing or stab that has been a hummer, only the mast, and every mast has been noisy, apart from one,
the new 82cm moses carbon, totally silent from new.
