Can I use a original LF Foil Fish for wake surfing behind a boat?

Postby smokedvw » Wed Aug 19, 2020 12:38 am

I have a 2016 LF Foil Fish and I have been taking it out to learn to hyrdfoil behind the boat. It seems like I need to get to about 15 mph to have the ability to put pressure onto the rear foot and engage the foil to come up and out of the water. Most of the resources I have read online talk around 10-14mph. I'm not sure if I put the foil adjustment more in the middle (vs all the way back) would then allow me to come up at a slower speed. I have then been trying to cut back and forth across the wake as I would wake boarding and that is about my level now. I havent found many good progression videos/tutorials on next stages so I'm just trying things as I go (if anyone has links that would be great).

I'm curious if that hydro foil can be used for wake surfing?

This was the original wing style

I'm wondering if I need to have a different surf style wing vs foil for that usage?

Thanks

I know people who have used it behind a boat successfully.

A surf style wing would be a lot more fun. With a surf style wing you can ride the wake and pump the foil. I don't think that will work with this foil.

This foil was great for what it was when it came out. Before this foil everything avilable was expensive and mostly for racing. These were way cheaper than anything on the market, and got a lot of people into foiling, but I felt like the ride quality wasn't very good. Felt very draggy and rough to me.

You shouldn't need 15 mph to get on foil. maybe sliding the foil forward would help.

I think it will work just dandy...

Not as big as some of the current big wings, but still over 800 cm2, which is a size many use today for pumping also, and a very good "overall" size for everything.

Have fun :thumb:

Why even ask? Just try it - what's the worst thing that could happen?

Because I have been trying and I find having to get up to that fast 15 mph won't work for surfing.

Ill try adjusting it forward to see if I can get it to rise at a slower speed. It's all the way back now as I'm still learning.

It doesn't really work due to the fact that you can't really pump this foil so when you need to generate a bit of speed to keep on the wave you're out of luck.
It works fine with the rope in hand though.
