America's Cup: Kite vs two AC75's

Postby SimonP » Fri Aug 21, 2020 5:27 am

Kite foilers go pretty fast, but they are still off the pace compared to an Americas Cup yacht.

Is it a downwind leg at the last part?

It accelerates like crazy indeed

Never heard about Nick Reeves and can't tell what gear he is on. One thing is for sure Nick is not competing on a high level in formula kite so if you put him against the top riders it will look about the same as in the video (he will be far behind).

I think they have said the AC75’s top speed will be 50 knots

Good point, I hadn't thought about that. I'm a mid-fleet racer and I've been lapped by Nico Parlier on a twice around course, so he would definitely do a better job of racing the AC boats

He seems pretty competent in the video though. He keeps his kite low. Looks like an R1V3 on short lines and carbon bar.

Specs say top speed is 50 knots but take that with a grain of salt. These multi million dollar boats are not going to be taken any where near to their limits.

In previous America cup races boats are designed basically the same way you design an f1 car. A normal car can drive thousands of miles but an f1 car had to be rebuilt after each race. The reason being they are built right on the edge of weight to power with structural strength at just barely enough to hold it together.

I have a feeling if these sc75s get taken out in 20 to 30 knot wind and pressed to their limits they will just explode in a giant cloud of carbon fiber dust.

I can't help but thinking they are ugly. They look like a frog lifting up first one leg than another. They should have been made as catamarans.

These things are ridiculously fast in light wind. It's possible a kite foil will beat them in 20 knots merely because the ac75 will forfeit if the wind is just a little bit too strong.

The ac75 class is huge weird but really fast.

Why do you think the AC75 would have more of an advantage in light wind? I thought it would be the other way around. Since kiters can choose a huge kite (now 23m and 25m), the wind speed doesn't have much of an effect on speed upwind or downwind. The angles get better as the wind increases, but the speeds are about the same.

Assuming these boats will behave similarly to the boats from the last America's cup. In this video it was blowing 11 knots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTL3yWwkQM4

The boats were doing about 25-26 knots upwind, but the angle only looks like around 45 deg to the wind. I think top kite racers can do 22-23 knots upwind in these conditions, but at around 30 degrees to the wind. That's about the same VMG.

Downwind they're going 30-32 knots, but the angles are only around 45 degrees from straight downwind. Top kite racers can easily do these speeds, but at deeper angles (around 30-35 deg from straight downwind). Seems like the top kiters would have the advantage downwind in these conditions.

On this race however, it looked windier. The boats were hitting significantly higher speeds and better angles both upwind and downwind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2QMdKem6lY I'm not as sure the top kite racers could keep up in these conditions.

Looks like there was some disagreement over what the upper limit wind speed would be, but they decided on 23 knots. 6.5 knots for the low end. https://www.sail-world.com/news/226506/ ... s-resolved
