The Phantom 1080 Foil may be the first crossover foil between kiting and winging!

Yesterday I did a review of the Phantom 1080 compared to the Moses 633. In that review I mentioned that the Phantom 1080 had become my new favorite kite foil. And it was! It is! I love that foil! Subsequently, FONE mentioned to me that is was their favorite winging foil. Wait! I thought the 1080 was a kite foil???

Last night I did double sessions on the Phanton 1080 foil, winging. Guess what? It is an epic foil for winging! Just epic!

The takeaways:
I like to wing slowly, and ride swell, and pump in swell. I like to ride fast from time to time but predominantly I prefer to ride slowly, to carve and to surf. The 1080 worked impeccably for that. It felt carvy at speed and very easy to control but also had incredible low end. I didn't notice any loss on the low end compared to any of the giant foils I've ridden.

Previously the only foil I had that could perform double duty was the Moses 790, but it really lacked pizzazz for kite foiling. However, the 1080 does not lack for wing foiling, in fact it excels, and it excels in kite foiling.

The only downside perhaps is that it does not glide as well as the 1480. No kidding right? However, I was able to get some long runs carving on swell with the wing parked and the glide was impressive. I have zero complaints about its ability to glide - it glides well. But the larger Phantom foils glide exceptionally well.

If I would have known this I could have gotten by for kite foiling and wing foiling on one foil - the Phanton 1080 rather than buying the whole quiver!

Regardless, this is a great foil and the only truly double duty foil I've discovered.

For kite foiling I rode the 873 (a breast) and 790 a fair amount. At my weight of 175# the 790 was always manageable and it worked, but I'd hop back on the 633 which was delightful. I found I had to work far too hard to get the 790 to work for my style where as the 633 was just fun. I forced myself to ride the 790 in order to discover what all it could do. I rode it more out of obligation. Then I'd get to have "fun" by hopping back on the 790.

With the phanton line, on the 1080, I don't ride that foil out of obligation, but because I find it to be really fun.

Im heavier at 190 and for me 790 means more pumpability and size less kite than 633 which is good deal 5m kite on 790 is better than 9m on 633.
Of course when blow im on 633.

I own Phantoms 1480, 1280 and Mirage 1000. Had the Phantom 1080 been available at the time I bought those wings I would have probably got it instead of the Mirage 1000. Neverthless I really enjoy this 1000 when winging on flat water because of it's speed and amazing carving ability but also in big swells and strong wind where it's lack of glide compared to it's bigger cousins is not an issue.
Never used it with a kite but I would say that it's weekest point when winging is small to medium swell where pumping becomes very phisical. You really need to choose your front wing depending on what you want to do and the size of the waves. In an interwview given by Tituan Galea (F-One rider) he says using the Escape 530 most of the time. I guess no pumping required on big waves...

I own Phantoms 1480, 1280 and Mirage 1000. Had the Phantom 1080 been available at the time I bought those wings I would have probably got it instead of the Mirage 1000. Thanks for the info. Yesterday I had the chance to ride the 1080 back to back with the 1480. The 1480 is super fun to ride in the little river swell we had yesterday. It pumps easily and glides for a long time. By contrast, the 1080 is more playful at speed (but that 1480 is also playful). I envision riding the 1080 in waves having more push (I've yet to ride in the surf, just been limited to the river). I can imagine that if the 1480 can stay on foil in river swell, that it may get overpowered in faster wave conditions. We shall see. Plan to do a bunch of wave testing this winter via sup foil on the same foils.

The odd thing is I can't find a single link to the Phantom 1080. Is this an "in the know" foil? When you google it the only thing I find is a link back to your 2 threads!
