Viron3 in 8m for light Wind foiling? Good Idea?

Postby 1234567Simon » Wed Sep 09, 2020 9:12 am

Dear All,

I just got the offer for a cheap Viron3 in 8m.

Is this a good idea for light Wind Foiling.

Problem with my LEI kites is that, in light wind they Fall down, once on the Foil it always is plenty of power.

I would like to use the Viron:

1. In light winds when 9m and 12 m LEI start falling down

2. in light winds when I usually use my 9 Meter LEI

My idea was something like a 8 Peak....

I have newer tried a peak, and newer a Viron

Even if the Viron is Ok cheap, it is still a lot of money, to put in the garage, that might not even work .

Thanks a lot for a quick opinion.

Well Viron is a trainer kite so it is designed not to pull you around but quite the opposite. On Youtube there is Regis' video about Viron1 (4m) and hydrofoiling in high wind (25-35kn) and I do not see it promising and when you are talking 6-10kn range or something.

But I've not used Virons in action so this is just thinking out loud. I've just seen some ground flied from distance.

Yes , I saw that Video..(I used the search funktion) looks ok . But maybe 8m is way different to 4 m.

Maybe 8 peak is by far better..... I have too little time, to waste it with the wrong material....

I need the „buy and have fun“ Material....

I've been use a Peak4 8m² for more than 6 six months and i dont have any complaint beside the difficult to relaunch (something that dont bother me as i don't crash often). Drift amazing, Self-Launch Amazing. Wind Range 9 - 18knots (sweet spot 10 to 16 knots - 82kg). My last kite was a Switchblade 12m² and i had the same problems that you mencion .

I flew a viron 4m on the beach. I'd never use that kite on the water. It was like flying an umbrella.

I had a 4m Viron. It wasn’t bad but wasn’t amazing either so if you want to blow cash on a cheap kite I’m sure it will help someone streamline their quiver.
But I wouldn’t expect it to fly or be rideable when a 9m LEI can’t. There’s no magic to kite sizes

The Viron will stay in the air better than a LEI but worse than a Peak.

The Viron sits super deep in the window so upwind is a serious issue but since you'll be foiling might not be too bad.

I wouldn't expect it to be anything near the fun a Peak is but it might work. The main issue is the kite doesn't develop much low end grunt to get you out of the water.

I agree, it is not a very good idea... during the above video with my 4m, it worked but i confirm Viron has a lot of disadvantages for low winds (i tried the 6m as well v1 on snow) :
- no grunt
- no real addition of power when you sheet in
- low agility AND few power in the loop
- heavy ... even not sure it flies really better than a LEI (ok a little bit, nothing to do with a light foilkite)

So ... IMO low end is worse than a LEI 9m.

Its advantages are good for hydro-foil beginners (depower, stability and relaunch) in the medium winds...

At low budget you can find better alternatives and target mote than 8m2 IMO

I tried foiling with an 8m viron. It took 50 feet to get up on foil. The power window was tiny....it had to be in just the right spot or it wouldnt pull. Sell it.

Deal All,

All are the same oppinion, so I will NOT get the Viron for me for foiling.

Thanks a lot! :thumb:

From my Point, this Toppic is finished
