Which tipe of board to choose

Postby JoseTumaco » Sat Oct 10, 2020 4:39 am

Need some advice
I own a Moses 91 mast with 550 wing. I am 75 kg and I hidrofoil 6 months ago, just progressing and begining to gibe. I own an Hyperlink 12m and usualy kite in 10/11 stable knots (sea). I want to buy a New board, Till now I used a Levitaz Converter model, and I have any opportunity to test any other Where I live. Thinking in a T60 Moses perhaps,... But I really dont know other good options. A local brand offers me this one (see photo),... Any advice is wellcome!

I dont foil but I dont believe the board makes much difference since you are already up on the foil and riding. I'll probably take some lessons from this guy and borrow the beginner gear: happy to be corrected if wrong on all this though. Perseverance I'd guess my friend, also make sure your gybes are faultless on a standard strapless first.

If anything it looks like the big boats are good for the beginning but once you have some control and are up on the foil I think I'd want a smaller board for maneuverability. Interested to know the answer to this from real foilers.

I just started out foiling and my local shop recommended the groove skate board. (They also sell the Moses boards)
I got a 130cm slate with a Moses 633/90cm.
The board has a nice nose that will bounce of waves or bounce you up if you go into rodeo mode.

Well, I'd ignore this particular piece of advice about foiling from this particular guy who doesn't foil. I've never kited with a surfboard, don't even surf, jumped straight from TT to hydrofoil, and learned gybes just fine. Would you pick it up faster if you already had it on a SB? Maybe. Or maybe it would hinder you because on a SB you don't have so much front-back sensitivity to worry about, so you'd have developed muscle memory that doesn't translate. Bottom line, if what you want to do is hydrofoil, then hydrofoil. No need to practice on a SB before you get there.

I agree with the other point, though, that big boats are nice when you're first learning so that you can taxi around on the surface as much as you need to. And then once you progress past needing that crutch, teeny tiny pocket boards are a blast.

It depends what kind of foiling you want to do. The board in the photos looks like a race board. It's a bit overkill for general free-ride foiling ... however, the wing you are using is more speed oriented, so it might be an OK match. If you want to focus more on gybing & playing around on the foil a smaller board would make sense - more relaxed for manoeuvring. But you might also want to think about a bigger surfier wing if that's what you want to do. In my experience, a board around 100 cm long is nice for all around riding. It will together nicely with something like the 550 wing or a bigger wing.

Hi Jose
Your Levitaz Converter is about 160cm long. For only foling you carry a lot of unneeded board length with you. Shorter foilboards will give you a total new sensation with your 550. Imho i would say around 120cm x 45/46cm is "the nice" allround size. 100cm is fun for riders who master the flying foot switch every time.
The T60 is 144cm and has only 4 holes , no track system. Used with straps it offers less tuning options - it might work with the 550, but not with a bigger foil like the 633.
Another nice detail of a foilboard is the amount of noserocker/scoop esp good when learning to gybe.
Then last not least volume vs no volume boards.

Oops - yes I meant around 110cm up to 120cm for all around riding.

Thanks a lot Breze, you gave me a lot of interenting info. And, what do you think about the board in the photo for my actual level (just gibing in taxi mode)? I am afraid it could be good for me just for 6 months until I learn air gibes? Wich other boards (arround 120 cm) are nice for fun and freeride (I am nit interested un race)?

Thanks a lot, I dont want it for surf, not either for race, only for freeride, and having fun in low wind days. If I get that one in the photo for progressing in gibes. Reeding what you wrote, I am afraid in less than one year I will need a 110/120 cm Long, what do you think?
What dou you mean the board in the photo could be overkill for freeride?

Thanks :thumb:

Hi Jose
I think the 550 wing with only 600qcm is your main problem with learning air gybes with flying foot switch. Try to learn the air gybe and do the foot switch when in taxi mode. For this your Levitaz Transformer is fine.
Your Moses combo has the short fuselage, it allows the 590 wing as the biggest freeride wing, also tiny 650qcm if compared with modern easy going wings like the 679 wing (990qcm) which would be a far better/easier solution for your progress than an other board. But for these bigger wings you will need the 710 fuselage.
The board in the pic is a raceboard. Beluga nose, narrow- i guess it could be only 39-42cm wide, but these boards are about 140cm long. They are build for maximum upwind angels and stiffness.
These narrow raceboards are harder for learning foot switches, not impossible but not easier than with your current board.
I would sell the combo and get something like this https://www.gong-galaxy.com/en/product/ ... lu-carbon/
