What I would like to see here is a folding engine - (...)
One way that might work is having the engine mounted in the front, on a bar that pivots on the nose of the board. Once you catch a wave, push down the bar (or just let go: the default should be engine turned off and out of the water) to lift the engine and keep riding with a regular, low drag foil.

Too complicated. No pivot, no lever. Just mount your motor at half your mast length. Catch the wave using a motor boost, your foil rises and.... so does your motor above the water....

Could you adjust the position of the engine on the water? Say put the engine down by the fuselage when you need power to get from A to B - but move it close to the board for surfing.

The Waydoo seemed very impressive, its assembly and interconnecting parts is at pinnacle of simplicity. Looks like it will drag price down a lot for the whole efoil market. I hope to demo it soon.

They are not sold as is yet. Maybe in 2021. You'll have to send them an email. A few projects like this on the DiY scene for less than 2000usd. Above picture cost 10 to 12k usd.

So far, DiY or commercial, the answer is NO because the mast is drilled to let the wires go out at a fixed length to power the motor, you have to choose between efoil and foil surf. In surf mode you can run your foil in a low position (slow speed) to go from A to B.
If you don't drill your mast, this adjustable motor position is possible but unseen so far.
On the DiY scene, solutions exist to transform any foil into an efoil with wires outside the mast. The threads are hidden behind a 3D printed flush cover stuck along the mast

Spoke to someone who rides these things and he said the ultimate setup for him is the 5' Sport with 170 Classic foil and 250 HA foil with 50 rear stabilizer. He's my height and weight too, 5'8" 160 lbs. He calls the 170 Classic the all around foil for fun and turns and the "sports car" setup. When I mentioned I also have the desire to cruise the lake front and "sightsee" and have more stability AND also poach boat wakes with the folding prop he said without hesitation the 250 HA foil. Then I asked wouldn't I be less stable on a 250 HA foil than a 250 "Surf" foil he said, "Get the 250HA with the bigger 50 rear stabilizer" and I would get the stability plus more maneuverability on the wake. Thoughts?

I currently own the 6'2" Explorer (looking to downsize next summer - although I love the Explorer and never feel like it's too big) with a bunch of wings in the quiver. For your weight, the 5' Sport with the 170 Classic is a great combo. You could even start with the 200 Classic or 200 Surf to make learning easier - you'll likely grow a quiver of wings so may as well get the bigger / more expensive wing on the initial purchase (since the overall price doesn't change in the package deal).

I have one of the HA wings - the 200, and so far I'm not a huge fan of it with the 25 stabilizer, but need to try it out with bigger stabilizers. The 170 Classic and 200 Surf wings are much more carvey / snowboardy than the 200 HA wing. I tend to use the 200 Surf in the ocean and the 170 Classic in flat-water bays and canals.

My fave wing is the 200 Surf, but I weigh over 230#. My friend who weighs around 170# also favors the 200 Surf wing; it's just a great wing. I don't currently own the 250 HA wing, but that's coming in the future. Whatever you go with I'd pair it with the 50 rear stabilizer to start.

I and my buddy had two long sessions yesterday on 5’.
I rode 250HA/40 with fixed pitch prop and loved the setup. Tiny rolling waves made it more fun.

Buddy rode 170 Fish -> 170HA/40 -> 170HA/25 -> 250HA/40 -> 250HA/25 - all with folding prop for side-by-side comparison.
His comments were
170 Fish - hard to start, not fun
170HA/40 - great fast setup
170HA/25 - more loose feeling, needs more speed to fly
250HA/40 - great setup, the easiest of these all
250HA/25 - more loose feeling, a bit more playful

In a second session he rode 250HA/40 with fixed prop and said it’s as easy, except you can’t just drop the throttle.
My feeling was the fixed prop gives more instant response. Maybe it’s just the learning phase, I’m sure I’ll be riding folding prop normally. The HA wing and folding prop result in 2 hours of riding per battery charge.

5’/250HA/40 was just fine and easy compared to my last good session on 6’2”/250surf/50, maybe a tad more challenging but just fine for 215 lbs and bulky wetsuit for cold water. It just wanted to put knees further forward when starting

Congrats! I think I would tend to order the one I tried. It's a huge amount of money and I would want to know exactly what I was getting. For me it was the 5' Lift Sport 170 Classic foil I demo'd. But I hope I can try a few more foils before April. Clearly the front runners are Lift and Fliteboard. But there are a host of others now and potentially Supernova in the Spring. Covid will be pretty much over and with lower cost options I predict the Efoil scene will burst.
