GKA News:

Superfoil Fortaleza - Day 1

gka.jpg

The qualifiers for the GKA SuperFoil 2020 were run today in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Day 1 of competitions started with heavy rain, which had cleared by midmorning, thankfully replaced by good wind and some moderate swell. Wind was averaging 15-20knots for most of the day.

Format for the day was 5 minute heats, with 3 minute transitions in between. Judges were looking for perfect execution and technique, freestyle tricks and plenty of variety. It's the first competition of its kind for the GKA and riders have an open book in which to leave their mark.

Riders in today's SuperFoil qualifiers really impressed the GKA judges with their diversity and individual skills, each rider having a distinctive style. Two of the stand out riders during the qualifiers were Charles Brodel and Fred Hope.

Charles rides with a foil kite, straps and boosts huge airs, with boardoffs and perfect landings. He shows a lot of commitment in this field of riding, but also squeezed in 360’s and smooth carves in to his 5 minutes heat. He took first position in the qualifiers with 25.60 points.

Coming in close on his heels was Fred Hope, who rides an inflatable kite, and uses strapless, with stylish and impressive technical skills. He’s a pleasure to watch on the water, especially when he’s landing strapless backrolls on a hydrofoil, it’s not a trick you see landed that frequently! Fred had been training all day to land an Around the World, by carving a 360 degree circle around the kite, but the wind was too strong. Unfortunately it didn't work out this time, hopefully we will get a chance to see it later on during the competition. Fred placed a well earned second in the qualifiers.

Coming from twintip kitesurfing, Maxime Chabloz showed commitment to the foil with huge board offs, he took third position. His progression in this discipline has come rapidly, and he will certainly be a rider to watch in the coming days.

Another rider who really impressed the judges was veteran athlete Nicolas March Paniza. He gave the younger riders something to aspire to, with incredibly smooth board offs and landings. He placed an impressive 4th position.

We will be back with more action and Round One of competition heats tomorrow. Good night from Fortaleza!

Qualifier Results:

1st Charles Brodel 25.60
2nd Fred Hope 24.50
3rd Maxime Chabloz 19.00
4th Nicolas March Paniza 16.91
5th Titouan Galea 16.16
6th Loic Brismontier 15.30
7th Pedro Vianna Silva 11.83
8th Nilson Costa 6.16
9th Dudu Mazzocato 0.00

I watched the qualification run, and it is a nice show...exactly what I say since years!

But why not for twintip? would be even more show! Since it basically is Airstyle. Just with a too long fin ;-)

Judging criterias are nice for a show:

- expression
- diversity
- innovation

I am convinced we will see more of hydrofoil events than twintip freestyle (wakestyle) in 2020.

I would like to point out:

4th Nicolas March Paniza 16.91

He is over 60 years old and did a nice show. He is a former Airstyle rider ;-) So he knows many nice tricks.

I do hope he will manage to get on the podium...fingers crossed!

Where did you see this event? Are you in Fortaleza or you watched at any YouTube channel?

Maybe you should try it then and realize how much harder riding anything but a twin tip is. Most riders can start basic jumps within weeks of learning to kite with a TT. A basic strapless backside air takes much much more practice even for a good rider.

In order of difficulty for performing a given trick and from easiest to hardest.
1 TT
2 surf+ straps
3 foil + straps
4 Surf strapless
5 Foil strapless

Most kiters ride hooked twintip.

Why not attract the biggest group but instead go to niches?
Doesn’t make sense, never did.

Nothing should be excluded, but ALL should be included, specifically the main group.

GKA credits:
Worlds most boring competitions to view.
Worlds most rediculous conflict of interests in any sport competition claiming exclusive world titles.

And now they put resources and effort into a foil freestyle comp, just about the most niche format that costs at least an extra $2000 for the foil in addition to the already fairly expensive equipment.

And where? Brazil.. a developing country.

Just go away please, the caffeine sugar water company does a better job than you guys at promoting kiteboarding.

Kiteboarding would be better off if anyone could run world championship competitions like in boxing away from the utter nonsense of having World Sailing involved. Before World Sailing stuck its greedy little nose into our sport there used to be 2 world tours by kiteboarders for kiteboarders and i can tell you they were exciting times for competitive kiteboarding.

Now we really know the truth. By the GKA a kiteboarding association now starting a wingsurfing association ( a completely different sport!)in the hope of getting a start on other associations again trying to control things at a legal level $$$.. we know how much they are commited and care about kiteboarding.

They are like a joke kiteboarding organisation IMO.
