Selecting board for boosting on Hydrofoil

Postby sonny2727 » Fri Dec 25, 2020 7:53 pm

Hi Guys,
I'm wondering what the best board shape and size for jumping. I've been using a fairly large board Axis 48 (142 X 48) for boosting with race hydrofoil wings. I can see some people use smaller boards and other prefer larger ones. I find larger boards are forgiving after coming down form a jump and can plane away but if you do more tricks maybe a smaller one can be easy to grab. Lower Weight of course is plus either way..

I think you have answered your own question...

Individual preference, Horst likes super small short boards, others (most I think) prefer something in between, and of course, the highest jumpers are the racers, can jump much higher because of more speed, big foil kites, and good technique, and almost perfect boards.

So they use their normal raceboards, eventhough they are not small - but you can jump higher on what you are used to.

And raceboards are superlight because they are thick and with carbon, and stiff, so performing max, giving the highest jumps and easy to rotate in the air as light.

Even smaller boards could rotate easier, so some prefer this, but would not make sense for racers not to use their almost perfect boards IMO.

You need a fortified board for big air. Pure race boards will not last long. The hypermiler in the video would crack under the front foot eventually and/or would break the rail. Ask me how I know :) ( broke 2 of those )

Really a personal preference thing with respect to size. Durability of mast connection and deck under heels are critical and require knowledgeable carbon construction to last. Heel dents lead to compromised rails and broken boards. Very robust exoskeleton is needed. All factory non carbon will not last.

so which production boards you would recommend? I just need to find few options and see local availability. Perhaps greeting an old second hand board is better as it seems most boards break when jumping

What foil you riding?

In my mind, ordering exactly what you want dimension wise, mounts etc is always best and probably cheaper than factory carbon.... Martin at io Kiteboards is the best. He knows how to build bullet proof. I have 10's of thousands of boosts on mine. Like new.
