I thought I'd post again now that I've had a couple of well powered sessions on the V2 Surf 150. It definitely performs well and is fun to ride. As has been mentioned it has a higher top end speed and glides better than the classic 150. Turning is easy and it feels very responsive to tighter or longer turns. I'm at a stage where I'm tacking to toeside and then switch feet. I feel like I can carry better speed around the tack onto the new reach with the V2 Surf. When I did get over powered it was managable and easy to ride. While it has really good low end speed I'm still getting used to how to pump back on a plane when it stalls. It seems like the Classic wings slowly drop off a plane and sink. They are also easy to pump up and get planing again. This wing has a lot of lift and will stay up almost at a dead stop and it's a little different getting it moving forward again. I think that's something I'll get used to pretty quickly.

So does that mean you like the 150 surf V2 better for kite foiling over 150 classic? Or is the difference in handling have its downsides too?

Close but overall I prefer the 150 Classic. Just a perfect wing for me. The downside is they no longer make it and it doesn't travel well.

Have borrowed a v2 surf 150 and was out on it twice today. Usually on a 170 classic.

The 150 with 40 tail is the same fuse length as my 170. The stabs have the same wing span just a bit less area on the surf 40. The main wing is much higher aspect and has around 10 cm bigger wingspan. I breached the tips a fair bit at first. The V2 150 surf is lower drag. There is noticeably more glide in transitions. Turns just as well and feels a little “looser”. Feels better at high speeds than the 170. Not sure it’s much faster, just nicer when going fast but front foot is further forward. The biggest difference for me though is in how they ride at slow speeds. The 170 classic is so much nicer handling down near stall speeds. Everything from aggressive cut backs to water starts and landings are easier on the 170. Where the 150 surf has nice glide in tacks, the 170 can be so much easier to control in slower moments of direction change and you can ride the stall, where the 150 surf will drop out harder and buck you more easily.

So far it’s been a relief to find I like my 170 better. I get that Lift are looking for efficiency but am not sure that’s what I personally want as a free ride kite foiler. I have a kite to take my weight and find my speed envelope is pretty slow. I like the slicker feel of less drag, but in the end prefer the forgiving low end nature of a real spade shaped wing.

I don’t think my tastes are exactly universal so you should try it and judge for yourself.
