Best Sab wing combo for making my 360's?

Best Sab wing combo for doing nice smooth 360’s like this?

I have the typical 633/483 combo and I never seem to able to carry speed and glide as well as shown in the video. The few 360’s I make are always very pivoty. I’m sure part of it is poor technique, but I’ll welcome any gear change that will make it easier on master this. I’m 76 kg and ride a 120cm Groove Skate. Already invested in Moses carbon masts (72 and 82 cm surf masts). Determined to get consistent at my 360’s this season. Thanks for any input!

Hey!

I think a good wing for glide but still ease of use would be w800. Would require you to get a new fuselage and back wing too though...

There is a 1100 cm2 semi high aspect surf wing coming out sometime quite soon, might be decent for it but not as good as the W800 I would guess.

But a pivoty turn is done with board flatter, a carve like in the video is done with way more heel. Flying the kite well should allow you to have drive through almost all of the 360 and the drag shouldn’t be that much of an issue. Maybe try to go faster aswell, that will widen the circle:)

For previous w800 commenter.

W790 should fit same fuselage as 633. 790 is surf/sup/wing frontwing so I guess it should be better in qualities you are after.

Go to kiteforum w790 thread to ask more from experts there.

790 is 1550 cm2 big and quite thick, so has quite high drag. In my mind only suitable for lightwind kiting. OP was looking for something with more glide, and from the video link looks to like riding with good winds.

A better bet in my mind would then be the 679, is quite a bit smaller, thinner and a bit higher aspect than 633. Still not very high aspect. Will definitely be a different ride compared to w633, but changing to w800/s400 would be a bigger step and difference.

Hello Dave,

Your Foil and Board are not the issue. Smooth radius 360s can be done pretty easily on the 633/483 combo (see the video below from 2.00 minutes onwards)

What can be an issue is, if you have the foil to far forward in the tracks. A lot of riders think that a lot of front foot pressure helps for maneuvers, but that is a misconception and actually makes it harder to smoothly fly through those upwind maneuvers like the 360 or tacks. Try moving the mast back a few cm and see how it goes.

If you're breaching the foil you might get a marginal gain from a longer 91 or 101 mast. But I think the 633 is a good wing for learning the 360. A smaller wing will make it faster and potentially more stylish like the 1st video, but will also make it more difficult.

You can’t buy your way to the “harder” foiling skills.

Practice practice practice!

Having butter smooth water and wind sure helps though.

Thanks for the input. Relieved to know that it’s technique and not gear (I don’t want more foils!). Gunnar, my foil is mounted way back on the tracks of my Groove Skate so I’m pretty sure that is ok. The guy who made the video (the one I posted here) told me that if my kite wasn’t right up at 12 o’clock when I started the carve I would likely get forced into a quick pivot in order to complete the 360. Even if I started the upwind carve at 11 o’clock it would “fall behind me as I carved upwind”. I’ve been starting around 10-11 o’clock and initiating the carve simultaneously with pulling on the back hand. I’m guessing it’s way harder to time everything just right that way, rather than starting the upwind with the kite already at 12. I also want to practice it one-handed instead of having both hands on the bar. I think my front hand is sorta screwing things up by not quite doing what my brain is telling it to do

I had the same experience with the 633.

Check out this discussion, some useful tips. Rob is a great teacher, thanks Rob if you’re reading this :thumb:

Personally I prefer the 683S (679) as it gives me (I think) that extra little bit of speed / momentum going into the carve.
