the rope on the mystic looks really thin to me. has anyone experimented with moding a "back up" rope in the event of the main rope breaking? i have an idea how i will do it but perhaps someone came up with a brilliant idea already. i recently had my rope slider break and i didn't have a backup,, had a bit of a drama so now i think i like having a back up from now on
also, the ring that slides on the rope seems pretty thin to be putting a chicken loop thru, i guess it will work

double up the rings to alleviate the friction, don't jump transition (sliding under high load occurs heavier load/wear)

monitor & replace the rope regularly

Splice a 5mm dyneema rope into another 5 mm dyneema ropa and use that. Once you have worn through the outside of the first rope it is time to change.
Also, find that a pulley works much better and last longer than a ring. It also makes the rope last much longer. Here is a example.

I drilled 2 new holes and put a second rope. The second rope is relatively slack so the ring rubs only the primary rope and the secondary is an unworn backup.
I did have a slider rope break when I thought I had at least a few more sessions of use. A backup is a good call especially since hydrofoiling tempts us to ride so far.

yes, one slider rope breaking was enough for me. but are you saying you drilled 2 new holes in a mystic slider bar? it looked problematic to me

The Mystic Stealth Surf Rope Spreader Bar has a built-in mini-rope (used for locking the slider in-place for boosting and such) that could be used in a pinch if the primary rope breaks.

papa,
You can try 7/64" dyneema for your backup. It is just under 3mm diam so you may be able to slot it thru the existing hole. I use them for steering line pigtails. They are 1400 pound strength so in case your 3/16" main line breaks you don't have to worry at all. Just make sure you tie a large knot behind the hole.

I use two O rings for backup reasons. I rode a chicken loop for a winter season without wear. Now I use a wichard 2673 instead of the CL. I use the rings from West Marine that are 1" ID and 1/4" wire diameter, making the entire ring OD at 1.5".
