hydrofoil weights vs volume of boards

Postby windfreak74 » Sat Mar 06, 2021 4:57 pm

so many brands why so little information on weight and volume?
the reason i post this is that my foil tends to sink 1/3 to 2/3 of the board down depending on conditions !only the front sticks out.
im somewhat anoyed that the low volume boards does not float sufficientlly to make it easier to spot it on the water.
can some of you foilers make a summary in weight of foil you own and board volume. so others people do not have the same problem.
my board is roughly(115x 44 x 10mm) 5.5 liters in volume and the foil is 4.5 kilos. it sinks ! the only pro i can think of is be more efficient and dont fall!!! :D

A Gofoil with a Maliko 200 front wing might make your board float level?, so it is difficult to know how combinations will float.

Had a really low volume but hefty wood board for a while and with a metal foil it would float very low and nose up. Occasionally ditched in such a way as to take 30 sec to surface! At least it broke the skyline when your head was at water level.

Broke that foil and had a carbon foil on it for just a bit while a new board was being built. That was actually worse as it floated flat and was even harder to spot!

Now on a full carbon set up and have neon green rails to help with sighting, but it often floats on its side.

Think it’s just a thing with pocket boards and why they often have some bright colours in the paint job.

That's a good point, I think it's more tricky than weight/volume of the board though. Your mast/fuselage/wings have a certain weight/volume as well. So, one foil setup could weigh 9 lbs and sink, while another one that's 9 lbs would float if your board was just on the verge of sinking/floating (small volume board obviously).

All that to say, more info can't hurt!

Hello Johnny, you are right!! guess i had not thought that. my first wing was a smaller wing which probably is a fiberglass foam corred wing(manta foil 2015, 535 cm2) . never had any issues with that wing probably some neutral boyancy wing. the big wing im using now is a solid chunk G10(manta foil 2018 g10 wing 1100cm2), weighs more and does not float. will try smaller wing again.
fuselage is solid aluminum.

I don't think it is as easy as weight and volume, because of so many combinations board and foil. .

My advice would be to choose a tad longer board, and then get all the advantages from these too.

Not flat, and colored, so you at least can see the nose of the board over the chop :D

Otherwise do the rubber duck trick, here on my 3 foot skimboard, works excellent and super fast to spot, unless I ride in a pond flooded with baby ducklings
