Since foiling is mainly done with the board out of the water , does the board really matter ?

so many believe it makes no difference, they are the ones who have no experience of ever trying, buying, and finding out.
fake news if anyone says it makes no difference.
it makes a massive difference, as many have found once they try.
mmmm only one post!
sorry to judge but where is this going?

Maybe he wants to screw the foil baseplate directly to a pair of sneakers?
There are guys pumping with just a skateboard deck as a board

Foil board designs are soo funny especially wingfoil boards!
All the copy from the marketing department of a boards that lives the water (and more) for a board that spends next to no time in the water at all!

I am sure there are some people who are good enough that they never hit the water.
But a board not hitting the water probably means you are not trying new things.
If I speak for myself:
After about 25 foil sessions I am now pretty good at carves but I still hit the water now and again because of either some wave or because I was just sloppy.
And I am now trying footswitches that basically means I am hitting the water each time I try.
I think it will take me at least a hundred sessions before I can 99% flawlessly do what I see as basics in any condition: carve/tack/footswitch/360
So having a board that behaves very nicely on a water touchdown will make life a lot better a LONG way into your progression.
Even after the "basics" getting into e.g. jumping will ask a lot more of your board.

Nah. If you attempt flying foot changes while you're flying, you'll get a better feel faster for what you're supposed to do. Credit to jumptheshark; his riding low or bouncing off the top of a bit of chop and swapping feet over the trough is the easiest way to do it. Combined with a bit of a lightfoot ballet work, it's easier than finding the right patch of water and hoping you can keep up the board speed for a surface foot change...
And if you do bork it up, the board doesn't matter... cos if you're CoG and/or kite work is wrong, you wouldn't have made it anyway.

I was this way about super short boards, then I tried a super short board, and it is quite different, and not only in the water start. If you want to know the difference, you'll have to try both a big and small board.

After 4+ years of foiling, I have settled in on riding a 33in home build plank (no rocker) in flat water conditions at 12kn+ and a bigger production board (37in-42in) (with rocker) in waves or light wind. I touch down more often in waves, and having the size and scoop helps, but I love the feeling of having almost no swing weight on the shorter plank.
