That Article is so full of wrong and outdated information. The incident in 2016 involved him getting stiches, but to his forehead and it was not a "cut" per se. The skin split from the impact. What we in Germany call a Platzwunde.
The guy in question also responded to Jamie Mitchels first article to clarify that it was his own fault and that the condition where not suitable for him to be learning on.
In my almost 5 years of Surf and Supfoiling the only time I have been cut during a session is by other people surfboard fins (which are way sharper than the leading edges of a surf foil)
The writer of the the article should be fired for his lack of research and for spreading misinformation.

Also ban skateboarding and rollerblading from public paths. Lay your own asphalt to ride. Ban bicyclists from forest trails, fishermen from piers. Because it’s “dangerous”!
Keep smoking though - that’s kind of cool?
Foils could be dangerous, but also many other sports and it’s not cool to go with a foil into crowded spaces. One gotta be smart enough to assess dangers to public. Yet we give 16 year olds driver licenses and let them on the road
And how many more people can’t swim or don’t teach their kids to swim and add to drowning deaths...not cool either

I'm guessing there are probably already plenty of injuries in crowded breaks just from regular surfboards. Would anybody here actually want to be foiling in a crowded break like that? I know I wouldn't kite foiling ... & I wouldn't need to. I think a bunch of surfers foiling together with surfers in a crowded area IS likely to lead to more accidents & injuries ... .it's just not relevant to my own experience kite foiling which is always in areas where there is lot's of space.

To be honest, on that video, the foil rider was inside, and it could well be that the man and his dog had dropped in on him on that wave...
And there's plenty of opportunities for things to go pear shaped with newbies riding 9ft boards and letting them loose at the end of a 10ft leash at every wave. And SUPs too...
Crowded areas are already a big danger as they are now. That's the main issue, not the hydrofoils

Come on man. Common sense. Foils are basically axes in the water and have no business near crowded breaks. Anyone with a foil at a crowded break is dangerous. You really want surf with some jackass on a foil next to you in crowded or powerful surf?
Benefit of foils is to make the best out of junk wind and waves. Take that shit to the area where there’s weak swell with no one around. It’s not all about you and your foil.

Sure you want to compare the dangers between small plastic fins and a 90cm long alu or carbon mast attached to possibly 90cm wide frontwing + pointed stabelizer? Of course fins can be sharp and dangerous in some cases with a bit of bad luck, but c'mon, you can't compare this to the dangers of hydrofoils and the way they flip around and glide further if someone wipeouts!

Longboards are waaaaaay heavier and people often don't wear leashes and they keep going with whitewater. Not to mention the fidbreglass swords on the back of them as well. And there isn't that much complaining going on about those logs. Sooooo........ to put it in perspective.
Where people foil, still often have to compete with longboarders, suppers and paddleskiers etc. Lots of people go for crappy waves.
