I had this on my LF as well.
I left them open, worked better than expected.
I think it's hard to seal them completly,

I sealed several mast by pouring silicone inside and then putting a tape and leaving the mast upside down on the tape the silicone solidifies and you remove the tape. you do this on both ends.

I just put expanding foam sealant in mine.
