water inside mast

Postby Mikkelza » Tue Apr 06, 2021 11:58 am

I have water inside one of my masts.

It is a aluminum mast (from Liquid force).
The reason why water is inside is because of the 3 small 'plugs' that covers the wholes sits loose. I manage to take out the biggest of the 3 plugs, however the two small ones are now push back inside the mast..

I think I have the mast reasonable dry.

How can I 'clog' the 3 wholes? Epoxy?

I cannot remove the collar/plate (the connection between board and mast) since the hardware is corroded (the previous owner..!). That you have ease the drying out and maybe removal of the small plugs.

I think the mast will last with no problem, despite a bit of water left.
Will there be any problems if I seal the 3 holes with epoxy?

Any other suggestions?

Get some EVA foam bits and cut them, well oversized, to fill the holes. Stuff them in with the help of a screwdriver so that they completely seal the holes, and push them in to a depth of 1cm. Then fill with a quality marine sealing agent like sikaflex 291. Of course you should first clean and de-grease the holes...

Yup ^^^^^. That's what I did with my aluminum mast and it works great. Make a plug simply for the epoxy to back against. Push it down in a cm and pour or stuff if your using two part putty of some kind.

Some mast plugs are just to hard, very hard rubber will not 100% seal out water when temps fall as your mast hits the cold water from being in the sunshine, it can suck water in past the plugs, turning your cold mast upside down so the water goes to the end shown in your pic, and heat the mast with a fan heater or hair dryer, this might well expand the air inside and push out the water, then think about resealing.
failing that method then find your longest screwdriver or long metal rod, or similar, heat the end up to red hot with a gas torch and melt that plug, melt a hole right through it, then shake out the water, leave to dry out (warming the mast will help) and then seal back up. :thumb:

pour epoxy in, tape it, turn it upside down. dry
repeat on the other side.
I've done this on 5-6 different masts, works great.
exterior painters tape is ideal.

You could have Carbon mast take on water a well.
