Ufo 9m bar, line lentgh and wind range

Postby Tsachi1 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 1:31 pm

Hey

I have just purchased a UFO 9M , with Bar Slingshot 2019 COMPSTICK W/GUARDIAN , 20M lines.
And I feel like this is not the correct bar for the kite.
I tried it with my Airush bar , and it behaved much much better the the slingshot bar.

What Bar do you use with your UFO ?
What line lengths ?
Do you change the lengths often ?
And what wind range do you feel comfortable with your setup ?

I modded my 20” Guardian bars for more throw. A lot more—26” from stock 17/18”. Works great. 20m lines.

For me 9m is ideal with 13-16mph avg.

Don't you feel the lines are heavy ?
Do you feel it steers property?
And do you ever use the handles ?

Steers well. I have an Airush bar as well. Prefer the longer throw on my mods

I’m using Clouds but they are very similar to UFO’s I’ve used both.
All my bars are 60cm, lightweight carbon with long throw. I use the bar with 20mtr lines on all kite sizes from 3.7 to 8 mtr.
The reason I use long bars on small kites is that when your drifting off the wind there is almost no bar pressure. You need a lot of bar input to initiate turns, and the long bar gives this.

I use a 52 cm cabrinha bar 2020 with 22 m lines and it works perfect.
Casually the white side of the bar coincide with the white side of the kite , same the black side.

Horses for courses I guess. I hate long bars. Use 17” (43cm) bars for 3,4,5m peaks and a 20”(50cm) on the 6m. I find that the light bar pressure negates the need for a long bar. Easy enough just to turn your wrist a bit more.

9m will be your big kite. 50cm or 20” is fine. 20m lines also makes sense for maxing your low end, but that size kite is also really fun on 17m lines.

I use 21m on my 6m peak but go down to 17m then 13 and 12m for the smaller kites. Loads of fun.

Have the compstick on my 4m and stripped it down. Ditched the clunky swivel (just unspin small kites) as well as the clunky o-shit handles with associated metal rings. Can lengthen the throw easy enough too. Might need it on a 9m.

Oregonkiteer and or Jump. Could you post a picture of your increased throw and stripped down Slingshot bars.
Thanks.

For the Guardian I simply replaced the stock sheeting rope that gives you 17/18" of throw with my own. I use 1/8th blue spectra with a locking brummell on each end. I bury a very long tail so that most of the rope is doubled within itself. Very durable. You lose about 20% of your length on the bury. I find that an 8' piece gives me 26" of throw. If it's too long I just throw an overhand knot right under the depower handle. I thought I would need to add extensions to rear lines, but found that if I hook the fronts up at the closest know to LE, and rears to farthest knot it's about perfect. I keep bars hooked to my kites, and did four bars this way. The extra throw really complements the UFO. In fact, I'd say its really necessary
if you want to get the full potential out of those kites. You can find youtube tutorials on how to replace your SS depower, splices etc. It's pretty simple.
