Aluula Roam vs. BRM Cloud

Postby pikovsg » Wed Apr 21, 2021 5:11 pm

Any of you tried these two back to back?
Super curious on your thoughts on drifting and turning speed of the two kites.
I've been on the Clouds for 5 years and adore them, but having gotten deep into foil freestyle over the years, now realizing strutless may not be the ideal kite for that.

interesting...

you've only flew single strut clouds?
(why?_)
imo, youre missing out on the whole cloud experience.. cloud performance comes from the strutless design...again, imo.(but the single and 3 strut kites greg sold may as well been prototypes... not "clouds")

i've looked at the alula kites in smaller sizes...

i'd like to see them compared to the ozone alpha v2

This is a good question.
While I haven't flown them back to back, I did have a good light wind comparative experience a few weeks ago.

I was on my 8m Aluula Roam and a friend was on a 8m Cloud strutless, and we both had about the same size hydrofoil (1000cm2) and were attempting to hydrofoil in 8-10 knots wind. My friend was arguably more experienced and skilled than myself. We both struggled to get going. After about 10 mins I managed to get the technique right and was up and cruising around. He spent another 20mins trying, gave up, packed his things and went home.

Now I do attribute some of my success to the Aluula Roam having some more structure, I think it must help in terms of turning, developing speed and apparent wind to generate power. However I was using 22m lines, where he appeared to have 15-17m lines on his cloud. I think that could also have made the most difference in terms of generating the needed power to get up in light wind.

The other difference i noticed between our two kites, the Aluula Roam was significantly easier to relaunch. When his kite landed in the water, the canopy would collapse water would wash over it and then he would struggle to get it off for relaunch. Drift on the Aluula is phenomenal. I just always feel like I can instantly turn the power on and off which makes foiling a dream experience. Much of the time I don't even feel like I am attached to a kite.

IN higher winds...at first the turning speed on the Aluula Roam was too fast... one small slight flick of the wrist and the kite is in the water. I did however have my bar on the 50cm setting. Doing a transition on a twintip and sending the kite the other way, like I do with a normal kite, was just do damn fast it would rip me off the board because the speed is just insane. It even sounds like a rocket ship. I switched the bar to the 45cm setting which helped, and paused the kite for a second while doing transitions half way through and that worked. The Aluula 8m I took up to 28 knots on TT, and it was very stable. The high end is equally as impressive as the low end. Doubt you could do that with a cloud...

Sorry, I meant to say strutless. Clouds are all about strutless, no doubt. :)
For waves, I don't think anything even comes close to a strutless Cloud.
But having ridden on Clouds for 3-4 years, I'm starting to realize that for big loops and more aggressive foil freestyle strutless Clouds are not that great. Too many kite inversions when using smaller kites in big wind and too much stress on the canopy during bigger loops. Plus, landings are harder with Clouds because you basically fall out of the sky.

That's why I'm interested in the Aluula Roam comparison.

I think what we're all waiting for is a super stiff & light aluula cloud.

Until that day maybe try a peak 4 5m piko, for me they beat a cloud in most respects, not all, but enough. Never experienced a kite I can have the same synergy with.

If I was jumping on the foil that would be different though I would probably choose a 3 strut or twin skin foil kite, aluula roam or soul maybe..

What does "foil freestyle" mean?

Foil freestyle is on water, wave and air tricks, similar to twintip freestyle, but w/o taking off the bar.
