Kites for foil freestyle

Postby pikovsg » Fri Apr 23, 2021 2:10 am

Would love to ask you guys to recommend a solid kite for freestyle foiling. I've been flying strutless BRM Clouds for four years and just realized that while they're epic for wave riding, they just do not stack up when going for bigger freestyle stuff on the foil. Lots of kite inversions during high wind loops and broken sheeting lines due to high pressure on the kite when looping.

Riding with foot hooks on a small 37" board using Lift 150 and 110 for foils.
Looking for that magic kite that drifts better and loops faster than a Cabrinha Drifter to improve:

– Backroll kiteloops
– Carving in waves/chop
– Air tricks in waves
– Megaloops
– Rodeos
– Various tacks
– New freestyle foil tricks

A few people recommended Dice and some are suggesting Alulla Roam. What are your thoughts?

I guess with your requirements you'd be getting into the 3 strut wave/freeride kites. Maybe not the pure wave kites since you want a fair bit of lift and poke in the loops. Maybe something like the Enduro, but I'm not too sure it's the best option in terms of drift to outdrift a Drifter.
I'm personally super stoked on the HB Legion (and Legion II), a dedicated wave kite but with good solid fwd pull, bit more lift and speed than typical wave kites but paired with absolute control of power and great reactivity. I'm pretty sure it'd do well for most of what you're after, but only way to find out is to try it. There are probably very few people able to give personal experience about megaloops and F16s on foils, so it's just extrapolations of what works in slightly different contexts.

Megalooping on a foil?! That might lead to some interesting video...particularly the one when shit goes wrong and that sword is flying through the air at high speed ready to seriously injure or kill any unlucky soul in the wrong place at the wrong time.

either of flysurfer's speed or soul would suit your needs

the speed if you want more performance/air... the soul is if you needed the more idiot proof kite.

I tried both Speed and Soul and found the turning speed to be too slow for quick loops. Mostly looking for quick loops and drift combo.

Aluula Roams should fit the bill. I've been on foil ( Lift 170 Fish mostly ) with a 10m Aluula Roam since last summer, and the wind range of that kite on foil is incredible. Had several smaller Aluula Roams ( 4 & 6m ) this winter and love them, while my quiver of small Cloud E's have been gathering dust. Hard to think about selling the Cloud E's, but the Aluula Roams do everything better, and more.

OR has a 60 day satisfaction guarantee ( https://oceanrodeo.ca/pages/purchasing-policy ) which should be ample time to make up your mind if the kite(s) work for you.

This returning philosophy is very nice and fair!!! Any small kite buildecompany should do that for their novelties ...

By the way, I rode this in their return paragraph : "A 20% re-stocking charge will be assessed for return of stock merchandise unless due to shipping error or warranty." does that really mean that we loose 20% of the value if we return the kite ? good to know for such kite price.

easy
ocean rodeo crave hl 10, 20m lines
also you need very durable foil and board for freestyle, I think regular set you will break in a couple of sessions

Nice .... Tnx Vol!
But that's a regular kiteloop and not so much a megaloop.

Anyway I'm sure it's just a matter of time
