Not a new subject!
So today I went out on my shiny new Moses/sabfoil. This is only the second time I have been out on it. Total of under 4 hours in the water. When I got back to the beach after almost 3 hours on the water the fuselage is covered in patches of corrosion! Amazing. This is my second problem with this foil in the 2 weeks I have had it. Not a happy camper. Is this corrosion normal for sab? Or do I have a lemon?
Will see how the second warranty claim goes. First one resulted in a discount on my next purchase. With the way things are going my next purchase will be a different brand! Yes I’m grumpy.
Had a look at another one on the beach, a couple of years old and perfect finish on the fuselage.

Not sure what causes it. I had exactly the same problem. I simply scraped it all off with my fingernail and found that the finish is perfect underneath.

Hi cglazer,
Yes, the corrosion comes off easily enough. I’m assuming that there are pinholes through the anodising, each time it will eat a little more metal and the hole will get bigger. Eventually they won’t scrape off. I just find it really annoying. My 2 alloy foils don’t do this.
Not to forget that this is not some old used and abused part, it is 2 weeks old!

I did research the net when a mate had a similar problem. Anodising has to be a certain thickness to provide proper protection. I’m not quite sure of the process but it looks to be a bit thin in those areas causing your problem.
I have an old Naish fuselage, 3 years of use and no corrosion at all so I would look at a warranty for that one.

What comes off is waxy.. probably some chemical left from manufacturing. The issue has not reoccurred for me.

Often this white stuff is the excess grease oozing out of the bolt holes and sticking to the fuse. Soapy sponge is the fix

Same here. Had it appearing on one fuselage when it was new for the first few days but after a few sessions it disappeared and never came back.
No issues at all, have been riding the fuselages a lot in very salty water.

it is a worry and a bit of a shock to see this, I have had maybe 6 or 8 new moses fuses over the past 3-4 years, and when new they all did this, one of them was replaced the same week and they let me keep the old fuse which I easily and quickly cleaned up with 600 grade wet dry paper and its been perfect ever since,
which is exactly what I have done with my new fuses over the years, yes they all did this white bloom thing on the first sessions out of the box, but then quickly settled down, and have been great since, its worth noting though that its important to remove the wings every few months for good clean down as it gets very cruddy between the mating surfaces if left for a long time, the sharper corner edges on the fuse may need a further rub down every so often maybe every 2 or 3 months to keep them smooth and worry free.

Well I have finally had a reply from SAB. My fault apparently as I didn’t wash it properly......
Theo’s corrosion happens while I was using it!
30 years at sea (yes really!) I haven’t seen anything like this happen when proper materials are used.
Edit, and sab decided to close the ticket. Effectively saying they don’t want anything to do with it. So happy.

I´ve had exactly the same experience after the first one or two times of use.
I was shocked as well. But I rubbed the whole fuselage with a thin layer of Li grease (the stuff which comes with a Moses foil kit) and left it over night, then removed the residual grease with a paper cloth.
The corrosion signs never appeared again. Problem seems to be temporary, luckily. Don´t know if my greasing has helped in any way.
My hypothesis is that this effect is caused by the extreme difference in electrochemical potential between Al (fuselage) and carbon (mast). C has the highest positive electrochemical potential, Al one of the lowest. Hence, perfect conditions for rapid electrochemical corrosion of the Al when the two materials are brought into direct contact in a conductive liquid (seawater).
