North Sonar wings

Postby Saffa365 » Sun Jun 20, 2021 6:49 am

Hi guys

Anyone ridden the new sonar wings.
Currently only riding the 1650 but it seems there is some stock around now
Looking for something to complement the 1650 for kite foiling and maybe winging also
1150 or 1500R ?

Any input would be great

I have the 1150 and 1650,, the 1150 is my favorite by far, all I do is kite so can’t comment on winging.

I've kite-foiled on all of these wings (1150, 1500R and 1650) and also used the 850
I'm 215lbs range and for a riding style perspective I ride the Scoop board no straps with Reaches 7-9m (noted brand affiliation).

1150 is a fantastic all-around kite wing. Low stall speed makes it very user friendly while top end speed is quite satisfactory, I certainly don't feel slow on this wing. For me this is the go-to all around kite wing. It's a step slower than the 850 but for me at my level of kiting and my riding style this is a great set up. By contrast the 850 doesn't have a top end for me, but with a higher stall it's more demanding in transitions, super low-wind waterstarts, etc

1650 I had initially assumed would be too big to be any fun for kiting. I must say this wing works quite well, it's got massive lift for kite foiling, it's super easy to ride at slow speeds but remains adequately stable at full power. However it definitely has a noticeable lower top end speed than the 1150 and I wouldn't see it as the best kite wing for full powered riding for intermediate + riders.

1500R is an interesting wing and I have been riding this for the past month. It's big and almost as lifty as the 1650. But It feels like it is about the same speed as the 1150. It's also incredibly stable in a straight line. I think this would be really interesting to learn on. My only reluctance to recommend it over the 1150 is it starts to feel a bit big when I'm full power/lit. (I'm hoping for a 1300 - 1350R in the future). There's definitely something interesting the the Reflexed technology (the "R") in terms of stability. I'm not winging yet, but the 1500R would be a high wind foil for winging for all but light weight riders. I'm really torn between the 1150 and 1500R for my riding. More sessions required.

I hope this helps.

Hi Saffa,

For me the 1500R replaces the 1650 in my quiver. It is more stable and faster turning and has more range.

My Sonar quiver for kiting is 1500R for really light winds on my 7m Reach and the 850 when the wind is over 12 knots.

For winging the 1500R is one of my favorite wings. It is still fast enough to go top to bottom on moderate waves and give great control in hard conditions.

In this video I am winging with the 1500R

jealous of that carbon mast/fuse!!!!! i think i might try to get a 850,, the 850/1500r sounds perfect if you kite and wing. i love my 1150 though, but I am at the point where i do want to go a little faster.

Cheers guys

I purchased the 1150 and will probably persevere with the 1650 for winging for a bit

I just wish there was more north kit available in the Uk

Apparently there is only 2 of the carbon mast setups being shipped to the entire country
